The steep drop of the markets in May was a sort of test. I heard somewhere it was the steepest drop since 1994 or something like that. I passed the test because I was profitable for the month, but I would only give myself a C- because I could have done a lot better with such a strong move. Anyway I am learning from the new twists of the market as they play out.
I was planning on increasing my R value to 1.2% for the month, but I decreased this value during the steep drop and towards the end of the month, so I didn't really risk that much most of the time. For June I will try to use 1.2% for my average R value.
Starting in June I am going to hold some positions overnight while continuing to daytrade. I decided on this because I think it will take advantage of the extra leverage that I have access to. So far, since I started trading at the end of January, I have not used more than 600% of my equity at a time (I have access to 1000%). I am hoping that this will allow me to increase my profits with little added risk. I'm starting out small just to see how well it works. I am excited about it, though, because this is more like the type of trading I did before.
I have slacked on my journal-keeping and I plan to be more diligent with this from now on. I didn't think I needed it as much as I do and was lazy about it.
I am also planning on meditating for 30 minutes before the market opens each day. It seems to help me focus and trade without fear or greed. It also reminds me of the importance of what I am doing.

A Princeton study has found that in the short term, stocks with easy to pronounce monikers perform better than less fluent ones. It seems that the biggest effect is at the IPO:
To prove the point, the pair finally analysed how well companies performed on the basis of their three-letter stock ticker code, which a company doesn't determine itself. Amazingly, pronounceable codes such as KAR still tended to do much better than unpronounceable ones such as RDO. Once again, the pair invested their fictitious $1,000, and found that the fluent codes were $85 up on the first day, although the portfolio was just $20 ahead after a year.

Today was a day for the shorts. AMR had a nice dummy-style setup this morning:

When it broke down $25, I put in an order to short it at $24.99, but it never filled. I could've easily shorted it at $24.95 - as you can see, worrying about pennies cost me dollars.

Speaking of the Seven Samurai, it looks like there is going to be a remake of the film with George Clooney and Hong Kong action star Donnie Yen. It was already remade as the 1960s Western, The Magnificent Seven. It looks like Harvey Weinstein will be the producer.
George Clooney? I've got to see this.

I saw Sanjuro again this weekend. It is one of the greatest samurai movies of all time and one of my favorite movies. Directed by Akira Kurosawa and starring Toshiro Mifune - the dynamic duo of Samurai films - it is a must-see for the samurai genre lover. As samurai movies go, it is the Old School Reel Deal - like the more well-known Seven Samurai. Don't miss this one!

People are so involved in their material interests that when they look at the manifestations of the human soul, and at pure relationships between people, they look at them from the point of view of how to improve their material well-being. Respectability is often measured by one's wealth, and not by his real inner spiritual value.-After Ralph Waldo Emerson

As I've mentioned many times before, the not-so-distant future is going to be a pretty cool place. Professor John Pendry, from Imperial College London, says with funding an invisibility cloak could be available within five years (via digg). The cloak would be made with metamaterial from nanotechnology, so that it could change the direction of electromagnetic radiation - it would neither reflect light nor cast a shadow:
Light waves would flow around an object hidden inside the metamaterial cloak just as water flows virtually undisturbed around a smooth rock... Whatever direction it is viewed from, the light bending round the hidden object would make it appear to have vanished.
I can't wait to get one.

CNNMoney has an article about Kurzweil and the Singularity Summit of a few weeks ago. In the short article, Chris Taylor talks a little about the financial impact of the exponential growth of information technology:
Think of the long half-century it took IBM (Research) to rise to dominate the computing world. Now compare that to the decade between Microsoft's (Research) IPO and the establishment of its monopoly on operating systems. And then contrast that to Google's (Research) lightning-quick ascendance to power.

JCOM traded to a new high today. It is not yet a top alpha stock, but I noticed it from a Cyberquant scan that I have set up. Today would have been my best day so far if I were not in "minimum trading mode." It sucks when you have a 10R day and all of your R's are about 50% of what they normally are. Damn. Anyway, I'll take what I can get.
But it is an important lesson to think about and I should write it down so I don't forget it. When trading very carefully, you can still make money while the risk of a big loss is greatly reduced. When not trading carefully, you can still make money but the risk of a big loss is greater. What I mean to say is that even when trading very carefully, a bull market is not going to run away without you. Sometimes I trade less carefully because I am afraid of missing an opportunity. Today I could see that being careful did not result in missed profits.
My winners were JCOM, HANS and AKAM:

Bill Cara linked to a google-cached article on Richard Ney's view of the NYSE specialist the other day. I first heard of Richard Ney through the Market Street newsletter. His books helped to me understand the corruption in the markets - "that the specialist exists not to ensure the free and orderly trade of stock in a particular company, but to fatten upon the innocence and ignorance of the small investor."
Besides being an investor, he was a movie and TV actor. From imdb.com:
When his first book, "The Wall Street Jungle", came out in 1970 it was on the New York Times best seller list for 11 months. Yet it met major resistance. Not only would the Times not review the book, but the Wall Street Journal went so far as to refuse to take an ad from a New York bookstore that featured the book.
There were only two people who weren't allowed to be guests on "The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson." One was Ralph Nader and the other was Richard.

No picks this morning because my computer wigged out again. Unfortunately I traded with my backup system and got chopped up this morning. *sigh*
It might be a good idea for me to take off the rest of the month in order to keep this month profitable, since it is only barely profitable right now.

The first goal as a trader is not to lose all of your money. If you are able to achieve this, your next goal is to outperform the market. If you trade for a living, then you need to make enough to live on.
The Nasdaq is down about 6.5% in May. This is a totally new scenario for me. I started day trading at the end of January and this kind of move blind-sided me.

I didn't lose much, but I missed a chance to make a lot of money. There was a lot of money to be made on the short side.
With a steep move like this, everyone is looking for the bounce. The impatient ones pay for their impatience.
It reminds me of some advice my uncle gave me when I was just starting to play tournament chess. Tournament chess is touch move - if you touch a piece, you have to move it - and so he told me to sit on my hands and to be absolutely sure I want to move something before I touch it. It is the same with this market. You have to sit on your hands. Wait until the market tells you that it is definitely going up - wait until you are absolutely sure before you make your trade.
I really need to put a lot of effort into learning to trade upside down. Shorting is not the same as buying backwards - it acts different. These last few weeks have given me an opportunity to study a lot of charts and to figure out what to look for and how to make this work - so that is what I have been doing.

A lot of advertising today assumes that the more antioxidants a product contains, the healthier it is for you. For example, white tea has more antioxidants than green tea. This leads many to believe that it is more healthy. It is true that it has more antioxidants, but there is no real evidence that it is healthier for you. Cyanide is an antioxidant. Yerba Mate is a "super antioxidant," yet it probably promotes cancer:
"Mate consumption was significantly associated with an increased risk of developing esophageal cancer and showed a clear dose response, with a relative risk of 2.84 ... for those drinking more than 1 liter/day of mate as compared with nondrinkers", things got even worse for those "drinking mate at a very hot temperature": they were at a FURTHER 87% risk in increase vs. those drinking warm to hot mate, "after adjusting for cumulative consumption of mate."

Inspired by Maoxian's post about Male-Driven Spaces, I have decided to pursue starting a Fraternal Order of Stock Traders. The first thing I would like to do after I get together some members is to elect a president and treasurer. Next, we can start work on a constitution which will set forth our objectives so then we can begin fundraising for a convention. After that we can get to work on a secret handshake.
To begin, I need to know how many people would be interested. If you are interested, send me an email so I can add you to the list.

When I saw the preview for United 93, I thought it looked cheesy and I was afraid it was going to resemble a made-for-TV reenactment. But when I heard some positive reviews, and saw that it had a 91% on rottentomatoes, I wanted to see it.
With such a sensitive subject, it would be very easy to go wrong - but Paul Greengrass did a great job of presenting a realistic view of what did and might have happened.
Leonard Maltin also liked it:
As someone who repeatedly chides the studios for making formulaic fluff, I can't condemn anyone for tackling one of the most significant true-life stories of our time. The film is impeccably well-made, executed with taste and restraint; it certainly pays tribute to the passengers of that fateful flight who took heroic action and changed the course of history.

If my calculations are correct, the QQQQ traded over 200,000,000 shares only once before - June 24, 2002 marking the bottom of the 2000-2002 bear market. What does this mean? Is it now marking the top??? Or just another bull market low? It means something and its significance will become more clear as trading continues.

This isn't a student of mine, but it is interesting to watch the technique of the man in the yellow shirt. He is obviously inferior to his opponent, and yet he remains unscathed throughout their encounter. It is a lesson in kung fu that can be used in trading the stock market on a day like today.

I noticed that Maoxian featured BKD as a notable new high yesterday as it blasted into new territory. When I left my previous employer, they knew I was going to be a trader and they asked me to give them one stock pick. That's not an easy thing to do, and I don't really like doing it, because anything can happen and change the chart and technicals at any time. But I had recently noticed BKD and so I told them about it.

This morning, before the open, I was on the phone with another previous employer (who I am currently doing contract work with) and they asked for a stock. So I told them BKD. I hope they got it this morning as it was up aother 11% today.

Ray Kurzweil wrote an article recently for the Science & Theology News which mentions his predictions about nanotechnology:
Rob Freitas [a senior research fellow at the Institute for Molecular Manufacturing] has designed a nanorobotic red blood cell, which is a relatively simple device - it just stores oxygen and lets it out. A conservative analysis of these robotic respirocytes shows that if you were to replace 10 percent of your red blood cells with these robotic versions you could do an Olympic sprint for 15 minutes without taking a breath or sit at the bottom of your pool for four hours.
...The most interesting application of computerized nanobots will be to interact with our biological neurons. We've already shown the feasibility of using electronics and biological neurons to interact non-invasively. We could have billions of nanobots inside the capillaries of our brains, non-invasively, widely distributed, expanding human intelligence, or providing full immersion virtual reality encompassing all of the senses from within the nervous system.

I'm sure a lot of you have already seen this, but for those of you who have not - you really should check it out. The BBC meant to interview Newswireless.net editor Guy Kewney, but accidentally interviewed a Business Studies graduate from the Congo who was waiting in reception because he was applying for an IT job.

Researchers at Harvard, Yale and MIT have found evidence that you are what you think.
"Our data suggest that meditation practice can promote cortical plasticity in adults in areas important for cognitive and emotional processing and well-being," says Sara Lazar, leader of the study and a psychologist at Harvard Medical School. "These findings are consistent with other studies that demonstrated increased thickness of music areas in the brains of musicians, and visual and motor areas in the brains of jugglers. In other words, the structure of an adult brain can change in response to repeated practice."
And about the benefits of meditation:
Facing an important deadline, people tend to worry about what will happen if they miss it, or if the end product will be good enough to suit the boss. You can drive yourself crazy with unproductive "what if" worry. "If, instead, you focus on the present moment, on what needs to be done and what is happening right now, then much of the feeling of stress goes away," Lazar says. "Feelings become less obstructive and more motivational."
There is speculation that meditation may even slow or reverse aging because it "counteracts the natural thinning of the thinking surface of the brain."
I am convinced that meditation can only improve trading and so I am now going to try to do it every day. For those of you who have never meditated before, this is a great place to start.
