Silver Wheaton Corp. (SLW)

SLW gave a nice narrow 30-min bar to get in at $10.88 over the 10:30 candle, with a stop just below it at $10.82. This made it a 5.5R trade, although I didn't put my usual 1% into it for liquidity reasons (actually it probably would have been okay) - I only had about 0.5%=1R for this trade.

At least it ends the month on a positive note. In May I plan to increase my average risk per trade (R) to 1.2% to see what effect it has. At some point in the near future I also plan to keep 50% of monthly profits in my account to allow for compounding.

Celgene Corporation (CELG)

The three most annoying and painful things about trading are:
1) getting a bad fill
2) getting stopped out and then watching as the stock turns strongly around in your direction and continues that way the rest of the day
3) breaking your own rules
I did all three today so it was a sucky day:

What an annoying fill - I mean 8 million shares were traded by the time this happened, why am I getting filled 16 cents below my stop (over 1/2 R)? The minute before the low was 41.5 and the minute after it was 41.41 - I get filled at 41.2 and it never went lower. Anyway, this pissed me off and it made things worse to see CELG continue to make new highs all day long.
What I think made me break my rules and over-trade was that I felt like I'd miss out if I didn't continue to trade. I missed out on CELG and the market seemed strong, so I didn't want to miss out on the rest. Now I know that when you are annoyed or pissed off, it is best to stop trading for the day.

Commodities Top and Nanotechnology

Maoxian posted Bill Miller's comments on commodities and how "pension funds are falling all over themselves to allocate a portion of their assets to commodities ... AFTER the biggest bull move in 50 years." Ray Kurzweil, in his book The Singularity is Near, predicts that most industries will profit from the exponential growth of information technology, except for two: commodities and real estate. Commodities because anything - even gold - will easily be produced from raw materials via nanofactories (which will likely be available by 2015). And real estate because people will be spending more and more time inside virtual reality.
Here is an excerpt from an analysis prepared for investors by Credit Suisse First Boston (via crnano.org):

Nanotechnology is a classic, general-purpose technology (GPT). Other GPTs, including steam engines, electricity, and railroads, have been the basis for major economic revolutions. GPTs typically start as fairly crude technologies, with limited uses, but then rapidly spread into new applications.
All prior GPTs have led directly to major upheavals in the economy - the process of creative destruction. And nanotechnology may be larger than any of the other GPTs that preceded it. Creative destruction is the process by which a new technology or product provides an entirely new and better solution, resulting in the complete replacement of the original technology or product. Investors should expect that creative destruction will not only continue, but will also likely accelerate, and nanotechnology will be at the core.
What does this mean from a practical standpoint? Because of the advent of nanotechnology, we believe new companies will displace a high percentage of today's leading companies. The majority of the companies in today's Dow Jones industrials Index are unlikely to be there 20 years from now.

Josh Wolfe of Lux Capital, editor of the Forbes/Wolfe Nanotech Report, writes:

"Quite simply, the world is about to be rebuilt (and improved) from the atom up. That means tens of trillions of dollars to be spent on everything: clothing... food... cars... housing... medicine...the devices we use to communicate and recreate...the quality of the air we breathe...and the water we drink, are all about to undergo profound and fundamental change. And as a result, so will the socio and economic structure of the world. Nanotechnology will shake up just about every business on the planet."

Trader Mike post on 100R

Trader Mike has a nice, thorough post about the results of his day trading for the last year or so. I found it very interesting to compare to my own stats since I started day trading at the end of January.
Trading for a prop firm is different as I have more leverage (currently 10x compared to 4x) but I pay 10% of the profits to the firm. Plus I get cheaper commissions and someone who seems to be able to help account issues or problems resolve more quickly. If I had a lot of money, I probably wouldn't use a prop firm, although there are some advantages. I think trading with a prop firm is a good idea for someone who doesn't have a lot of money, but wants to try trading for a living.

I currently risk 1% of my account per trade (1R = 1%), but I am thinking of moving this up closer to 2%. I am up about 34R since I started trading at the end of January. The biggest drawdown per month has been 4R or 4%. 34% is okay, but not enough. With my side programming job I have enough - but I would like to only trade for a living. Risking only 1% per 1R leaves a lot of wasted leverage which is the whole point of why I quit my job to trade in the first place.
I figure that even a 10% drawdown per month is okay as long as I remain consistently profitable. Any drawdown (less than 100%) is okay as long as I remain consistently profitable. And the more I put to risk, the more I can make.
The goal is to have a system that is consistently profitable and the highest risk level that will not allow you to go bust in a worst case scenario. Risk is a tricky thing to adjust because I DO NOT want to go bust. Starting in May I plan to slightly increase my risk to see the effect it has on my trading and profits.
Even though I don't ever pull my stops, my biggest problem is over-trading. My new "three strikes and you're out" policy has been working so far to stop me from getting carried away.

This week I will feature one of my top students. The style he uses to beat his opponent dates back to the reign of the Yellow Emperor. I was impressed with this demonstration of his ability to harness qi energy. Here is a video of the fight he had in prison, caught on the security cameras (warning: it is gruesome).

One of those days

Today was a choppy day - I struck out. As I mentioned before, after three failed trades (strikes) I turn off the computer and quit for the day. So even a bad day is kind of nice because you get the day off to do other things. Still, I'd rather make money every day. But the weather has been great, so it is kind of nice.

Money article on computer trading

Maybe the next Warren Buffet is a computer? Computers are getting faster and smarter at an exponential pace, while humans remain about the same. Any disadvantages that computers have now, such as lack of judgement for anticipating change (mentioned in the article), won't last much longer.

But the real advantage machines have over people is that they're not human. Emotions trip up professional money managers like they do the rest of us. Pros hold on to plummeting stocks, not wanting to admit a mistake. Or they rush in when a stock takes off, often too late.

Korean gamers hired as day traders

Korean firm Goodmorning Shinhan Securities is considering to hire professional StarCraft gamers as day traders.

"The mastery of professional gamer's hands and their familiarity with the Internet environment can be good qualities to become day traders," he added. He declined to disclose the players' identity, though.
"The hitch is that the professional gamers have no knowledge in finance or investment. We will see whether they can develop qualities necessary for day traders through training," the spokesman said.

Teledildonics

25% of total search engine requests are porn-related with 12% of total websites being pornographic. Combine this interest in sex with the exponential growth of information technology and, well, you get things like the Sinulator:

Gina Lynn, who writes for Wired magazine, uses the Sinulator:

"People are still really afraid of...any sort of combination of sex and technology and of the Internet," she said. "What people are missing here is the point, which is the human connection that we are facilitating through the technology."

With full submersion virtual reality available within the next couple of decades, things should only get more exciting:

"It's bound to happen ... and is not as far off as some people think," Minsky, a professor emeritus at MIT, said of direct brain manipulation. "They are doing things with monkeys but it is not a big world-class industry yet, so that could take 20-30 years."
"But if the game (industry) people got involved in some underdeveloped country that didn't have any laws against it, it could all happen twice as fast."

NutriSystem Inc. (NTRI)

NTRI was my big winner today (7R profit). Good days seem to always come in pairs.
I was lucky and learned a lesson from my stops yesterday. I had a stop in at $50 for NTRI, but adjusted it down to $49.59 just in time - within minutes it dropped to $49.75, only to turn around and hurry to new all-time highs. Maybe someone was bringing it down to take out stops to collect more shares for the ride up.

Early on I was stopped out of ENER and HOLX for -2R loss. I have a new policy to prevent the Big Loss days - I call it "3 strikes and you're out." If I have three closed trades on the day, I don't allow myself to initiate any more...

This way I can still have big days like today without ever having a really bad day. With two closed trades early on, I was careful to buy only a very nice setup.

My second biggest gain for the day was AKAM (4R profit):

I don't have a subscription to Barron's, so I couldn't access the article I noticed in the recent issue, but a friend sent me the text. It mentions de Grey and Kurzweil, and a quote from Robert Freitas:

"There are many, many different components of aging and we are chipping away at all of them," insists Robert Freitas, a senior research fellow at the Institute for Molecular Manufacturing, a nonprofit, nanotechnology group in Palo Alto, Calif. "It will take time and, if you put it in terms of the big developments of modern technology, say the telephone, we are still about 10 years off from Alexander Graham Bell shouting to his assistant through that first device. Still, in the near future, say the next two-to-four decades, the disease of aging will be cured."
Right now, the rewards are still too distant for many private companies to openly join in the hunt for giant gains in longevity. "Anti-aging is just too far out for the stock market, too wacko," said an executive at one major biotech firm, who feared being associated with the topic publicly.

Just wacko enough for uglychart.com

Hundreds of companies of all sizes are in the hunt for genetic breakthroughs relating to particular diseases of aging. Many are focusing specifically on therapies involving stem cells, the basic cells of life, each of which is capable of growing into any type of cell. Giants like Amgen (ticker: AMGN) and Genentech (DNA), along with smaller companies like Geron (GERN) and and a number of private outfits, are all taking a crack at this approach. Though controversial, stem-cell work is considered perhaps the most promising avenue the anti-aging field.
As we age, damage results from chemical reactions that allow so-called cross-links to form among proteins that were previously able to slide across or along each other. De Grey notes it is possible to identify chemicals that can break these links. Alteon (ALT), a small biotech company in Parsippany, N.J., is testing a drug that may do just that.

Allegheny Technologies Inc. (ATI)

The last couple of weeks have been a dry spell for me, I couldn't get anything to move. However, I was able to avoid the Big Loss. I think the key is to avoid the Big Loss through the dry spells and wait for the "easy money" days like today. With a strong day like today, I am not satisfied unless I knock the cover off the ball, which I did not do. So I am not satisfied, although it was a pretty good day:

My stops were too tight - I need to remember to let them run. Letting the winners run is just as important as cutting the losers quickly.
I also caught some of the rides on SNDK and SWN.

Be a man

Whether you are male or female, the characteristics of a good trader are similar to the characteristics of manliness. Harvey Mansfield, author of the book Manliness, defines manliness as "confidence in a situation of risk. Other chartacteristics might be agression, assertiveness, boastfulness, swagger, calm under pressure, determination, and ambition."
These are also the characteristics of a kung fu master.

With 69 votes, Stock Bandit is the twelfth blog to be voted off the island. Eight remain.
Sorry Jeff, you must leave the tribal counsel area immediately.
Why was Jeff's blog voted off next? How has this changed strategies and alliances?
Tune in next Sunday to see who will be voted out next in Remainder: Stock Market Blogs.

My students

Earlier this week I featured a post displaying the skillz of one of my kung fu students. Some of my other students asked me why they were not posted to the website. After thinking it over I have decided that every now and then I will feature a different student.
This week it is two younger students performing the art of kung fu to the theme of mortal kombat. Click here for the video.

RunBot

RunBot is a robot that has doubled the previous record of walking speed to 3.5 leg-lengths per second.

His team mimicked biology to make their robot walk efficiently. "Humans have simple neural systems that learn a few basic modes of movement that function as reflexes," he says. "RunBot works the same, putting it on the ground triggers the reflex."

You can see a video of the robot in action here.
