Ugly Picks

Good morning, my name is Ugly, and I am a loser. I have it in me to do serious financial damage to my account. Everyone have on their rally caps?
TIE traded at the magic round number $50 for the first time this morning.
PLXS gapped down, but closed up yesterday - which is strong.
CELL had unusual volume.
ARNA looks like it could explode at any time.
AAPL and AQNT had nice reversals at their 200-dmas yesterday.
CELG broke out yesterday, I think it will go up more.
GOOG had a nice day yesterday, I didn't even notice it until now.

Nasdaq breakout

This is great news:

It looks like March will end strong as the bull market continues.
AAPL had a very strong rebound off of the 200-dma. A nice day to buy some call options.

Celgene Corporation (CELG)

What a day! Nice! Man, too bad I spent most of the day driving back from Ohio to Philadelphia, PA. I left at noon, luckily I bought CELG before I left.
I have had some questions as to why I am using the 1-minute charts. I've included a 1-min, 15-min and 6-month chart of CELG to show how I use them. I do not trade "off of" the 1-minute chart, but I use it for reference. I also have a 6-month chart up for each stock I look at for reference. But I trade off of a 30-min or 15-min chart:

I look at the 1-minute chart for the detail. It is the only way to see the block trades. With the 15 or 30 minute charts, you can see the high and the low, but you can't see what happens during the candle. I use the 1-minute chart to take a closer look:

The 6-month chart gives me perspective as to how the day correlates to recent activity within the past few months:

On a strong day like today, it is hard to go wrong buying a top alpha stock making a new high.

Hansen Natural Corp. (HANS)

HANS is a beast. It only goes up and has been going up for years. It has been the ideal stock. I was lucky enough to catch the move today on both HANS and TIE:

After looking over past trades, I decided that I was better going long - so today I was focusing most of my attention on the long side. I spotted these two because they are top alpha stocks and they were close to new all-time highs:

Today was my best day so far. It feels great to fatten the paycheck at the end of the month. I will probably take it easy tomorrow because of the FOMC meeting.

Kurzweil's Singularity reviewed in FT

James Harkin, in an article in the Financial Times, wrote a slightly negative review of Ray Kurzweil's The Singularity is Near. He thought the book was "singularly unhelpful."
The trend of the growth of information technology is exponential. Regardless of what you think of the Singularity, it is wise to trade with the trend.

Today's Trades

This is kind of cheesey, but I when I am trading I like to think that I have a candle burning inside of myself. When I am trading well (i.e. following my system and rules) the flame is straight and calm, no matter the chaos of the market. When I am trading poorly (i.e. not following my system or rules), the flame flickers and moves as if the air around it is blowing about. Every jolt of the market moves the flame. If you trade poorly for long enough, the flame will go out and you can't trade any more.
If you think about it, it is easy to tell the state of the candle within yourself. If you are suffering while you trade, you are trading poorly and the candle flickers. If you are at peace and comfortable while trading, your candle is calm and you are trading well. As you can see, it has nothing to do with the state of the market or whether you are in profit or loss.
I have unfortunately let the indecisive action of the market the last couple of days disrupt my flame. Not for long. Wax on, wax off.

Ugly Picks

Good morning, my name is Ugly, and I am a loser. I have it in me to do serious financial damage to my account.
The QQQQ is currently set to gap slightly down.
Yesterday morning I wasn't feeling ready to try to bite the ass off of a bull, but I tried it anyway - and the bull got me. I went short some stocks that never went down and ended the day down about 2-3R.
I said I thought Tuesday's action was a short term top. It looked like one, but the market may hold up. I won't be convinced until it trades over Tuesday's high.
XRTX is gapping up to a new all-time high.
Top alpha stock GIGM is gapping up to new 52-week highs.
YHOO and TASR are also gapping up.
NTRI was strong yesterday.
MDR is close to new highs.

Ugly Picks

Good morning, my name is Ugly, and I am a loser. I have it in me to do serious financial damage to my account.
The QQQQ is gapping down, as I mentioned yesterday I think the market will continue down the rest of the month.
ELN is also gapping down.
STXN had a nice move yesterday.
Both FWLT and ARNA look to break their 50-dma today.
Must have been some bad news on BOOM yesterday, as it crashed just after 3.

Resistance at QQQQ 50dma

The high volume reversal today on the QQQQ looks like a short term top:

There is a lot of support around $40, which is right about at the 200dma.

Dress Barn Inc. (DBRN)

What a day! What a reversal - things are looking weak now. Luckily the stops were tight on my longs and I was able to get short in AAPL at the end of the day. I was stopped out of a short in the morning, went long, and then got short in the afternoon. Days like today are too much work.
I noticed a couple of block trades on DBRN as it made a new day high, and I knew it was close to all-time highs, as well as on the top 100 alpha list, so I went long just after 11am:

When the market is weak and no other stock is catching my eye I think to myself, "Well, I can always short AAPL":

My short of AQNT in the morning didn't work:

Ugly Picks

Good morning, my name is Ugly, and I am a loser. I have it in me to do serious financial damage to my account.
The key to trading is doing whatever you can to avoid the Big Loss. I believe the big profits will come naturally as long as you can avoid the Big Loss.
The QQQQ is currently set to gap down.
DEZ had a volume spike at the end of the day yesterday - I wonder what it could mean?
STXN also looks as if it could make a move soon.
TRID will most likely make another new all-time high soon.
The volume on TS is picking up, so I will be watching it more closely.
TFSM looks set to move to a new level in life. Graduating up to a new league. When a stock moves over the psychologically important round number $10, it is like turning 21 - this boy of a stock is becoming a man (although TFSM was over the psychologically important round number $300 in 2000).
AZPN is ready to move.
JOYG is making new highs.
CAL has been flying into the stratosphere (the lower reaches of the stratosphere anyway).
AAPL is long past ripe and looks to be rotting.

Broadwing Corporation (BWNG)

Today would have been a lot better if I had not made some stupid mistakes early on. One mistake was getting too small of a position on BWNG:

I noticed BWNG because it is a top alpha stock making a new 52-week high. I wish I would have had more for that run.
Another mistake I made was that I broke a rule of mine and traded too early. I bought WFR before 10am and was quickly stopped out at 10:15.

And yet another mistake was that I bought too large of a position in PWEI:

PWEI was not liquid enough for my position and the last of my order was not filled until well below my stop.
Lessons learned today: no trades before 10:15 and not to put on too large of a position if the stock is not liquid enough. And if you think you have a good one, make sure you have a large enough of a position to be significant. Anything is better than nothing, but more is better than less.

Saudi Market Crash

The market in Saudi Arabia lost 20% last week:

"Many individuals have pulled their savings out of banks and put it into local stocks, with many even borrowing to the limit to do so," a vice-president at Riyad Bank in the Saudi capital, Khan H. Zahid, said.
Heart-attacks, stress, hospitalization, and panic selling are all reported results of the Saudi collapse, which has seen tens of billions of dollars in losses in a fortnight.

Ugly Picks

Good morning, my name is Ugly, and I am a loser. I have it in me to do serious financial damage to my account.
Today is finally Monday - another full week of trading ahead of us. What could be better?
The QQQQ is currently set to gap up.
The end of March is historically weak.
REDF, ESLR, and BMRN are gapping down.
SIRI, NVAX and VPHM are gapping up. Both ESLR and VPHM got killed last week.
TWTC was weak on Friday.
I was a little weak on Saturday, after all of the Guinness on Friday night. But it sure went well with corned beef, cabbage and potatoes.
SLW remains strong.
My gut is telling me that NDAQ is going to try to make a break through $50.
My eye will also be on HOLX, as I think it will continue its move up soon.
I was watching on Friday as "they" closed AMR right at $27 for options expiration. It was interesting to watch this happen.
PWEI had increased volume on Friday and could start moving up again soon.
TFSM is looking ready.
Last night I had a dream that I traded NWRE. In my dream, it started raining in my house and I had to move my computer underneath of a loft to keep it dry.

All NYSE symbols added to the database

Up until now, the database contained all AMEX and Nasdaq stocks. Now it will also have all NYSE stocks. They will be included on such lists as the all-time lows and the all-time highs.

The Stock Trader's Almanac says today has historically been a profitable day for the market. "Gains the day before Saint Patrick's Day have proved best, outperforming the days before many legal holidays for an average gain of 0.31% on the S&P."
Top alpha stock BMRN is gapping up to a new high.

NanoFactory Movie

If you would like to see how nanotechnology will be used in the next few decades to create atomically perfect recreations of anything from basic raw materials, check out this cool video.

Life in a supercomputer

Using a supercomputer, scientists were able to recreate a virus at the atomic level. Eventually (Kurzweil predicts about 30 years) scientists will be able to recreate the human brain at this level and the supercomputer will be conscious.

Running on a machine at the National Center for Supercomputing Applications, Urbana, the program calculated how each of the million or so atoms in the virus and a surrounding drop of salt water was interacting with almost every other atom every femtosecond, or millionth of a billionth of a second.
The team managed to model the entire virus in action for 50 billionths of a second. Such a task would take a desktop computer around 35 years, says Schulten. "This is just a first glimpse," he says. "But it looks gorgeous."

CIENA Corp. (CIEN)

I noticed CIEN because it is a top alpha stock that made a new 52-week high. It started to move pretty quickly from the open. I knew I would regret it if I didn't get in, so I could only get a small position based on the risk. Luckily, even a small position can go a long way with a stock like this:

Cybertrader also alerted me to AMR because of its block trade so close to a new 52-week high, which it eventually broke through:

And check out this trade on CELG! I learned a lesson here - don't be so agressive with adjusting your stops up! Man, I hate getting stopped out at the very low:

The QQQQ is gapping up. Let's see if it can hold or extend yesterday's gains. First it has to bust through the 50-dma. If it can hold over $42, it looks like we could make new bull market highs soon, which would be great.

$40 is strong support, if it breaks - look out below.
ESLR is gapping up close to new highs.

Penis Panic

Now everyone calm down. During genital retraction syndrome, the genitals do not actually retract:

Aside from the emotional distress, koro by itself is not physically harmful, and no actual retraction takes place. Injuries have occurred when stricken men have resorted to apparati such as needles, hooks, fishing line, and shoe strings, to prevent the disappearance of their penises.

There has been a recent outbreak in Nigeria.

An epidemic struck Singapore in 1967, resulting in thousands of reported cases. Government and medical officials alleviated the outbreak only by a massive campaign to reassure men of the anatomical impossibility of retraction together with a media blackout on the spread of the condition.

Trader-X......views from a distorted mind

I barely have time to check my email - and a lot of you know that I take days or weeks to respond to your messages. So I don't have a lot of time to check out new blogs. However, one blog that has grabbed my attention and that I have been reading regularly is the blog of Trader-X. Who is this mysterious Trader-X? Check it out.

MEMC Electronic Materials Inc. (WFR)

Today was a nice day for the market. It was one of my better days, but I am not really satisfied with how I did. When I trade poorly in the market, I think to myself, "You really could have done better." And when I do well in the market, I think to myself, "You really could have done better." At least it gives me the drive to do better.
WFR had a beauty of an uptrend going most of the day:

I noticed its block trade and that it was headed for a new 52-wk high. It is also a top alpha stock.
A couple of my other trades with FWLT and RBAK didn't work out. I don't think I should have bought RBAK because of its recent strong selling. FWLT has been trending down for over a month, also - notice how WFR worked out so well and it was trading at a 52-week high. Buying new 52-week highs (especially the top alpha stocks) seems to be the most profitable way to buy.

Ugly Picks

Good morning, my name is Ugly, and I am a loser. I have it in me to do serious financial damage to my account.
NVAX is gapping up and looks to break out.
HANS is strong, like always.
Even though the QQQQ is gapping slightly down, the big volume up day on the QQQQ on Friday makes me think that the short term trend will be up.
Today I plan on being more picky and to try to trade only the best setups.

Frontier Oil Corp. (FTO)

I got a nice one with FTO early today, but I squandered away some of the profits on a couple later trades. I was alerted to FTO by its new 52-wk high. It was in the top 100 alpha list that I had loaded into Cybertrader. I also noticed that Energy was very strong:

I believe the error I made with JOYG may be that I bought it with a poor setup. In other words, I wasn't picky enough:

Now with BWNG, I was stopped out and then immediately it broke out - just like with NDAQ on Friday. This kind of bothers me. I am picking the right stocks but I'm losing money on the winners. Either my entry is too soon, or my stop is too tight. I think today with BWNG, my entry was too soon:

I will have to be more patient and picky.

Good morning, my name is Ugly, and I am a loser. I have it in me to do serious financial damage to my account.
Top alpha stock NMTI is getting killed this morning and the QQQQ is gapping up 20 cents.
ENER is gapping up and ASYT made a pre-market new 52-wk high.
This Friday is options expiration and St. Patrick's day. Don't forget to promise to die for Ireland.
