Withnail & I (1987)

I wasn't really expecting much from this movie partly because it only got 2.5 stars from Leonard Maltin and also because it is a cult film and that usually turns me off. However, I was pleasantly surpised with Withnail & I. I actually liked it a lot and thought it was really funny. Set in the late sixties, it is also a movie about freedom and friendship. I highly recommend drinking at least a half bottle of wine while watching this movie. A half bottle of wine makes many things more enjoyable, but it especially makes this movie more fun.

Patrick Byrne and Mark Cuban

Check out the wikipedia entry on Patrick Byrne, CEO of OSTK:

Patrick Byrne is the current (2005) CEO of Overstock.com. He belives that there is a 'cabal' that is out to kill overstock.com. He also has admitted to making up stories about being gay and a coke-head to try to unvail this cabal.

Apparently he thinks that Mark Cuban, who "once paid all the years fines of $1 million dollars to the NBA in US pennies," is a "Sith Lord." Both of these guys are characters. Check this out:

Byrne does not appear to take Overstock's customer service problems seriously, downplaying the influx of complaints as minor issues here and small glitches there. "My bad" was his response to a horrible third quarter performance.

GMX Resources Inc (GMXR)

GMXR set up a nice dummy short today. If you sold below the 11:30 candle you would have netted over a 10R profit:

Ugly Picks

Good morning, my name is Ugly, and I am a loser. I have it in me to do serious financial damage to my account.

Dear Diary,
CASM today proved that it is a force to be reckoned with.
XJT bit the dust. So did SVL - ouch.
TRE and GMXR are going totally nuts.
Recent IPO UARM is doing just fine, as is SPWR.

My last day at my old job was Friday. Now I am preparing to begin trading. I have been thinking of ideas for the last month that I will now solidify. I believe the greatest challenge I face will be psychological. This will be my first time trading for a living and I have and will be doing some preparation to ease this pressure. I am going to try to focus on returns in proportion to risk and try not to think about the money. I will try to establish a routine. The market is familiar to me, but the new surroundings are unfamiliar and I am eager to adjust and become more comfortable.

Ugly Picks

Good morning, my name is Ugly, and I am a loser. I have it in me to do serious financial damage to my account.

Dear Diary,
I believe it would be a low risk buying opportunity for the BBH as it seems to be moving up from its trendline:

Obviously it could go down from here, but the odds are better that it will go up.
Japan is going nuts.
Recent IPO ITRN looks very good.
I think that the top 100 stocks ranked by alpha may even be a more important list than the all-time high list. At least for day traders, it definitely is. The top 100 alpha stocks are stocks that are going to be making the big moves. These are the stocks that have the attention of the market, and since they have the attention, each move made will be deeper and more exaggerated.
Often, a stock will be frequently seen on both lists. Take for example, TRE.
Also, GMXR.
I don't mean to lessen the importance of the all-time high list. It is a list of many beautiful stocks. The most beautiful charts in the market.

Dear Diary,
It looks like the BBH found that support at $200, which is nice.
The market wasn't as convincing, finishing weak after a strong start.
ULTI made a strong move to a new all-time high.

Winter Vegetables

The mustard family of vegetables (also known as Cruciferae, Cole Crops and Brassicaceae) includes broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, kale and Brussels sprouts.
"These vegetables contain high levels of glucosinolates, which when eaten break down to release isothiocyanates. Evidence shows that these isothiocyanates, which include sulforaphane, are among the most powerful anti-cancer agents in the diet."
I like to think of it like this: Vegetables are very healthy. Leafy greens are even more healthy. And the Brassicaceae are the most healthy of all. But it is best to eat a variety of fruits and vegetables.

Powers of Ten

Powers of Ten is a cool 9 minute documentary made in 1977 that tries to put into persepective the size of our universe. I first saw it in Astronomy class in 1998. At the end, when they show the carbon nucleus in the man's hand, I pointed my laser pointer right in the center of the screen as a glowing red dot. The class, mostly sleeping, must not have noticed - but I heard my professor laugh out loud. That laser pointer provided me with endless hours of enjoyment in college, including but not limited to entertaining the class by pointing it on a professor's arse as he is writing on the chalk board.

Josh Waitzkin, Chess and Kung Fu Master

Josh Waitzkin, famous child chess prodigy of the movie Searching for Bobby Fischer, is also 5-time and current Tai Chi Chuan Push Hands Middleweight National Champion in both the Restricted Step and Moving Step divisions. In 2004 he won the Middleweight World Championship Title in Tai Chi Chuan Push Hands (Fixed Step) and became the Middleweight World Co-Champion in Tai Chi Chuan Push Hands (Moving Step) competing in the 7th Chung Hwa Cup International Tai Chi Chuan Championships in Taiwan.

"The most important thing I believe I've learned [from chess] is the idea of when you have an opportunity, a gift, whatever it is, you take advantage of it."

Ugly Picks

Good morning, my name is Ugly, and I am a loser. I have it in me to do serious financial damage to my account.

Dear Diary,
Friday's IPO SPSN should be watched, especially by day traders.
Also a recent IPO, SPWR looks interesting.
SIFY is extremely strong as it makes a new 3-year high.
MYOG is a beauty.
Many traders have now noticed OSUR, which got killed last week.
For the strong up trend to continue, the BBH should find some support at the $200 mark.
Could that have been the blow-off top in HANS? If it is, you heard it here first. If it isn't, just forget that I said anything about it.
TAL is a recent IPO that is hot, and it is also the name of a great chess master and former world champion.

The Holy Grail of chess is up on eBay

A lot of Bobby Fischer's belongings, once stored in a Pasadena storage unit, are now being sold on eBay after they were purchased six years ago at a Southern California Flea market. Thirty years ago, when Bobby disappeared and stopped paying rent, the landlord sold the stuff off.
The story of Bobby Fischer, now a crazy racist and no longer great at chess, is a very interesting story of a true genius:

Garry Kasparov wrote that of all world champions of chess, the skill gap between Fischer and his contemporaries was the largest in history.
In 1957, Fischer won the US Open Chess Championship in Cleveland, Ohio, on tie-breaking points over Arthur Bisguier. Because of this result, Fischer was given entry into the invitational U.S. Championship. This was controversial because it was believed that Fischer was too weak and would finish last. Instead, he finished first [to become US Champion at age 14].
...in the 1963-1964 championship, which he won with an 11-0 record, the only perfect score in the history of the tournament.
In the 1971 Candidates matches, Fischer had a remarkable streak of twenty consecutive wins, a feat which has been compared to throwing back-to-back no-hitters in baseball.

Like water

"Be like water making its way through cracks. Do not be assertive, but adjust to the object, and you shall find a way round or through it. If nothing within you stays rigid, outward things will disclose themselves.

Empty your mind, be formless. Shapeless, like water. If you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup. You put water into a bottle and it becomes the bottle. You put it in a teapot it becomes the teapot. Now, water can flow or it can crash. Be water my friend."

Michelle Williams

Michelle Williams, co-star of the new film Brokeback Mountain about two gay cowboys, is the daughter of commodities trader Larry Williams who twice ran unsuccessfully for the U.S. Senate as a Montana Republican. With an 87% on rottentomatoes.com, Brokeback Mountain should be a pretty good movie.
Michelle was legally emancipated from her parents at the age of 15. At 16 she won the Robbins Trading Company World Cup Championship of Futures Trading by turning $10,000 into $100,000, which is the second highest profit in the tournament's history.
Her father taught her to smoke and drink:

She remembers, in a misguided attempt at aversion therapy, Larry offered his daughter a six-pack of "huge, Slurpee-sized beers," and told her to finish the whole thing. Instead of throwing up, she began to do cartwheels.
The two bonded at boxing matches with her dad driving to "these really seedy boxing clubs" in New Mexico towns like Albuquerque and Truth or Consequences.

Good morning, my name is Ugly, and I am a loser. I have it in me to do serious financial damage to my account.

Dear Diary,
Thinly traded COBR is making a move.
BTJ is doing the same.

When I was at the mprize dinner, I spoke to this guy who is an artificial intelligence programmer for Poker Academy. To my surprise, he said that programmers are having great difficulty in making AI that is good at poker. Unlike chess, which programmers now dominate, computer poker playing programs are not very good. He said a simple 'play the odds' program can beat weak players, but it will be destroyed by good players who can exploit it. He did mention something about a "game-theoretic optimal nash-equilibrium strategy" that is supposed to be good.

Asimo

I saw Asimo in person about a year ago. According to Kurzweil, his intelligence should double every 13 months or so. So in around 25 years, Asimo may be about one billion times smarter than he is now. Compared to one year ago, he can now run twice as fast and do simple office work. I like Fark.com's headline: "Honda's ASIMO robot now capable of menial office tasks like greeting visitors, making coffee, finding Sarah Connor."

Pietro Carrera's advice

In his early 17th century book, Il Gioco degli Scacchi (The Game of Chess), Pietro Carrera - the father of the Sicilian defence - offers advice on how to prepare for a chess match that I thought might be good advice for traders as well:

You must abstain some days from meat to clear your brain, and also let blood. You should take purgatives and emetics to drive away the humours, and must above all be sure to confess your sins and receive spiritual absolution just before sitting down to play in order to counteract the demoniacal influence of magic spells.

Depression is a disease

How differently would you feel if someone you loved was dying of depression instead of cancer?
Would you judge them on their illness?
Would you blame them for their disease?
I can't stand ignorant people who have no sympathy for the mentally ill. It makes me want to use my kung fu skills and beat the shit out of them.
Someone who is diabetic takes medicine because an organ is not secreting the correct amount of chemicals. When the brain errors in the same way, it is suddenly the fault of the victim.

The dinner

The dinner was a lot of fun. There was a lot of delicious, healthy food and a lot of interesting conversation. Aubrey de Grey first spoke about the SENS (Strategies for Engineered Negligible Senescence) project and its goals. Then Kurzweil talked for about an hour on the Singularity. Most of Kurzweil's slide show presentation contained exponential graphs (like this one or this one) of the rapid growth of information technology. Based on the charts one can predict that the next 25 years will change more than the last 500. If the growth continues at its current pace, computers will soon become self-aware, humans will be able to copy themselves to a disk and make backups, there will be full submersion virtual reality, as well as almost anything else you can and cannot imagine.
As chartists, we know that "the trend is your friend" and not to fight the trend. And never try to guess a top. But we also know that no chart goes up forever. I am excited to see how it all plays out. Regardless of the outcome, I think the world 25 years from now will be a much different place.
I wasn't able to get a hold of an Othello board beforehand, and Aubrey didn't bring his either. Weak attempts at creating a board from plastic cups didn't work either and we finally agreed to play online at some point in the future.
Kurzweil couldn't talk about FatKat (Financial Accelerating Transactions from Kurzweil Adaptive Technologies), no matter how much I pestered him. He did confirm what I already knew: that a small hedge fund will be launched in January, the program has returned more than 100% for the last two years, and Michael W. Brown - former CFO of Microsoft and chairman of NASDAQ - is an investor.

The Age of the Machine Trader

Wired had an article yesterday about computers that trade:

Computers have some major advantages over people in the trading game: They don't sleep. They don't ask for pay. And they aren't subject to the equilibrium-killing forces of emotion, which have been known to provoke even the most disciplined human trader to abandon logic from time to time.
"They're my partners," said Greg Ballard, a trader based in Fort Smith, Arkansas, of his PC collection. "I make them work 24 hours a day, don't give them vacation or anything." They're programmed to execute trades based on a periodically changing set of algorithms that track stock-index futures.
"Typically, emotions are your worst enemy," he said. "You don't want to accept the fact that you made a mistake, so you let that mistake grow. One of the benefits of having a more rule-based approach is you take emotions out of your decisions."

I was just reading last night, in Ray Kurzweil's book The Age of Spiritual Machines, about neural networks and genetic algorithms used for trading (keep in mind that this book was published six years ago):

Q: These evolution-based investment programs, are they really better than people? I mean, should I get rid of my stockbroker?
A: As of this writing, this is a controversial question. The security brokers and analysts obviously don't think so. There are several large funds today that use genetic algorithms and related mathematical techinques that appear to be outperforming more traditional funds. Analysts estimate that in 1998, the investment decisions for 5 percent of stock investments, and a higher percentage of money invested in derivative markets, are made by this type of program, with these percentages rapidly increasing. The controversy won't last because it will become apparent before long that leaving such decisions to mere human decision making is a mistake.
The advantages of computer intelligence in each field will become increasingly clear as time goes on, and as Moore's screw continues to turn. It will become apparent over the next several years that these computer techniques can spot extremely subtle arbitrage opportunities that human analysts would perceive much more slowly, if ever.

Update: check out today's article in The Age via kurzweilai.net regarding neural computation:

The "brain", grown from 25,000 neural cells extracted from a single rat embryo, has been taught to fly an F-22 jet simulator by scientists at the University of Florida.

Ugly Picks

Good morning, my name is Ugly, and I am a loser. I have it in me to do serious financial damage to my account.

Dear Diary,
The temperature is rising over at WBMD.
The top 3 stocks, ranked by alpha, had strong moves today - NTRI, TIE and NMTI.
BOOM! Just like that - a new all-time high. Nice breakout - it could run for a while.
TRID is also continuing its upward move.
PWEI and IFO are running fast and furious.
I have liked GFIG for a while.
CLMS is another stock with a fine looking chart.

There are too many good looking stocks for me to believe the market is going to turn down from here. Besides, it usually continues in the direction that it is moving.

Mprize Dinner with Ray Kurzweil and Aubrey de Grey

I was just invited to the exclusive Mprize dinner this Thursday evening in Boston. With only about 35 invitation-only guests, it should be a great opportunity for me to ask Kurzweil about his artificial-intelligence investment program, FatKat, and to play a game of Othello with Aubrey de Grey. Anybody have any good questions they would like me to ask? Would an uglychart.com t-shirt be considered "snappy casual?"

GTX Global Corporation (GTXC.PK)

GTXC, which is up over 100% in the last month or so, is a "provider of innovative IP multimedia technologies" that claims to have developed "the first true artificial intelligence:"

GTX Global Cognitive Robotics(TM) is an integrated software solution that mimics human behavior including a dialogue oriented knowledge database that contains static and dynamic data relating to human scenarios. The knowledge further includes translation, processing and analysis components that are responsible for processing of vocal and/or textual and/or video input, extracts emotional characteristics of the input and produces instructions on how to respond to the customer with the appropriate substantive response and emotion based on relevant information found in the knowledge base.

Discussion board feed

Some of you expressed interest in reading what Monksdream has to say on the discussion board, but didn't want to have to check the discussion board all the time. So I created an xml feed for the board which you can subscribe to with whichever personal news aggregator that you use.

It's official

I have officially resigned a computer programming position with my current employer and will begin trading as a proprietary trader with a firm in January. I don't know how specific I will be able to get with the actual trading, but I would like to post a detailed account of what it is like becoming and being a proprietary trader. Whether I succeed or fail, I think it will be a useful resource to others.

Cognitive enhancement drugs

I have mentioned this before, as it is a hot topic in the chess world. Chessninja.com recently posted about a study that shows how caffeine improves short term memory and focus, both of which are important to trading. If you don't take your morning caffeine, you may be trading with a disadvantage.

The findings revealed increased activity in the frontal lobe, where working memory is centered, and in the anterior cingulum, which controls attention, in volunteers after consuming 100 milligrams of caffeine, the equivalent of about two cups of coffee. These areas showed no increased activity when the subjects drank a liquid without caffeine.
"The increased activity means you are more able to focus," Koppelstaetter said. "You have more attention and your task management is better."

Samurai Assassin (1965)

I have managed to see a few samurai movies over the last couple of weeks. I was disappointed in Sword of Doom. Toshiro Mifune played his role perfectly, as expected, but his part was small and the plot was bad. There was one fight scene with Mifune which is very good, but the character Ryunosuke Tsukue was, in my opinion, poorly constructed. Samurai Spy, which is part of the new Rebel Samurai Criterion Collection box set, was so bad that I turned it off before it finished.
Samurai Assassin, on the other hand, was really good. Mifune plays Tsuruchiyo Niiro, an ambitious samurai who recognizes an opportunity and lets nothing get in the way of achieving his goal. It is a great movie to watch for anyone who is considering giving up their job to become a day trader.
