Ugly Picks

Good morning, my name is Ugly, and I am a loser. I have it in me to do serious financial damage to my account.

Dear Diary,
GROW is sprouting like a weed. It is way above its 20dma. It will have to pull back at some point.
A great stock for a day trade - can you spot the dummy entry?

Long at 11.51 on a buy stop over the 10:30 bar with an initial protective stop at 11.39.
BBBB is looking great.
NSSC is very strong.

Let's all welcome Monksdream to the board

After publishing the Market Street newsletter for months, Monksdream mysteriously disappeared. Myself and others lost all contact with him. After almost giving up hope in re-establishing contact, he emailed me and has reappeared on the uglychart.com discussion board. I am excited to have him as I am a fan and examined each of his newsletters closely. Here is an example [pdf] of one of his newsletters.

Traders defeat themselves

As I am planning to quit my job and become a day trader, I have been thinking about the system that I will use. I would like to use almost the same type of trading that I have been currently using, but on a shorter time scale. Similar to my current system, I hope to trade the trends and use strict money management rules. But because of the smaller time scale, the trends will be smaller. Because of the increased number of trades, profits will be smaller and my stops will be more tight.
One of the first places I looked is Maoxian's Trading for Dummies series. He describes a system of day trading in about 100 short lessons:

One sensitive soul wrote in to ask if I wasn't giving away the keys to the kingdom with these how-to posts. The answer is that good trading is 10% methodology and 90% psychology. People defeat themselves. It doesn't matter how often you repeat basic trading principles when almost no one will practice them.

Ugly Picks

Good morning, my name is Ugly, and I am a loser. I have it in me to do serious financial damage to my account.

Dear Diary,
Here is a riddle for you: If HANS is currently up over 100% from where I sold it for over 100% profit, how much profit would I currently have if I had not sold it?
GROW is headed for the sky.
JOYG made another new all-time high and is a beauty of a stock.

World Chess Beauty Contest

In contrast to the World Chess Beauty Contest website that is in all the news lately, I may create the World Chess Ugly Contest. As a chess player, I know there would be many many more contestants. This beauty contest website, created by GM Vladislav Tkachiev, is a lame and dorky idea - typical of a chess player. I am guilty of the same as I posted about this before.

Tkachiev said that the people who do not play the game have a wrong opinion about chess. "They think that it is only a game for those who are quite inactive and unattractive and aged," he said.

Yes, they are wrong - it is a game for those who are inactive, unattractive, aged and crazy. Although there are exceptions - the picture is of International Woman Grandmaster Alexandra Kosteniuk. See more photos on her website.

Wandering Samurai Film Fest Heads to San Francisco

I was lucky enough to get a chance to see some of these films in NYC and in Minneapolis - now they will be shown on the west coast at the Balboa Theater in San Francisco Dec 2 - 22. I strongly recommend Harakiri - which opens the event on Dec 2 - 6. For those of you who haven't seen all of the Kurosawa movies, they are also a must-see.
Here is an article about it in the San Francisco Chronicle.

Ugly Picks

Good morning, my name is Ugly, and I am a loser. I have it in me to do serious financial damage to my account.

Dear Diary,
The markets are pulling back a little here. How much will it pull back? It is too soon to say, but since the trend has been up I would guess it will continue that way eventually.
HANS made yet another new all-time high and moved up to the #7 slot on the top 100 alpha charts. What a beauty.
NWRE, located just around the corner from me, made a new all-time high.
IFO is definitely one to keep an eye on.
Hmmm, COBR is looking interesting with a new 20-year high.

I didn't renew my subscription with IBD, I am just too cheap. It sure makes things easier, though, and I miss it.

The timeless nature of charts

As I consider quitting my job as a computer programmer and becoming a day trader, I have been thinking about the changes that will have to be made to my trading style. Currently I would consider myself a "position trader" - I buy a stock and may hold it for many months. The chart of the stock plays an important role in my decision to buy or sell. Usually I will examine the 6-month or 1-year chart of the stock. How different will it be to trade with an intraday chart? Consider the following three charts:

One is an excerpt from an intraday chart, one a 3-month chart, and one is a 10-year chart. Can you guess which is which? Click on the one you think is the intraday chart to see if you are correct.

Thank you to Kathy Yakal and Theresa Carey for featuring uglychart.com in the Electronic Investor section of Barron's this week (p. 46). I appreciate the plug - thanks!

Proprietary Trader

I have been offered a proprietary trading position with a firm and I was wondering if any readers have had any experience with this and could give me any advice or opinions on the matter. I would be putting up and risking some of my own capital but I would have access to much greater leverage. Thanks for your help.

Palatin Technologies Inc. (PTN)

The chart doesn't single it out - PTN is not making any new all-time highs. However, there has been some recent action with news of its new inhaler-delivered love drug, PT-141:

New York magazine reported that women who took part in trials within minutes felt a "tingling and a throbbing" along with "a strong desire to have sex."
Men told the magazine a snort made them feel "younger and more energetic" as well as eager for sex.
"You get this humming feeling," one man told the weekly. "You're ready to take your pants off and go."

Do you have trouble reading uglychart.com at work, with your boss always looking over your shoulder? Now you can view it without worry using Ghostzilla - an invisible browser that blends in to your work applications. I hear that there is also work being done on a browser that is completely invisible to the naked eye and can only be seen on the screen with special glasses or contact lenses.

Ugly Picks

Good morning, my name is Ugly, and I am a loser. I have it in me to do serious financial damage to my account.

Dear Diary,
The market is on fire and it doesn't look like it is going to stop anytime soon. Based on the charts I predict that it will continue up until it doesn't.
CMTL has a nice strong chart.
GOOG is the man.
A reader informed me that CMED was not on the all-time high list. It is now, I apologize for its absence. It must have fallen through the cracks. Nice one.
The MDY keeps plugging along.
Gold is doing well. If you have made money, careful that your EGO does not swell. Keep it in check and trade like a samurai.
PNRA is rising.
I think TOMO could fly - keep an eye it.
I like the looks of NILE.
Nice move on ADZA today.

Chinese Kung Fu Star Search

The BBC reports that the Shaolin Temple is launching a TV show where viewers will vote for their favorite kung fu masters.

Judges and viewers will rank contestants by virtue, kung fu and artistry until they settle on a final 108 contestants, the same number as the rebellious heroes from the classic Chinese novel Outlaws of the Marsh.
Finalists would then get the chance to perform in a big-budget movie and TV series based on stories from the 1,500-year-old temple, which has inspired countless movies in Hong Kong and China.

The Singularity, TASR and Population Growth

Have you seen the following chart?

Yes, it looks just like TASR in '03-'04, but that's not what I am talking about.
It is identical to the chart that Ray Kurzweil made (if you rotate it and graph it linearly) - of humanity's increasing pace of technological advancement - as evidence for the Singularity. However, this chart is actually one of the world's population from 10000 BC to 2000 AD.
Maybe the technological advancement of the world is simply a matter of more brains working in technology? Could we be watching a top in the charts? Look what happened to TASR:

Will the same happen to the world population and our technological advancement? Is it time to short the world?
The trend is up, and you should trade with the trend. But always have a stop!

Ugly Picks

Good morning, my name is Ugly, and I am a loser. I have it in me to do serious financial damage to my account.

Dear Diary,
I am always skeptical of moves around options expiration. However, with the Nasdaq closing at a new 4-year high, no one can deny that the trend of the market is up. And if you are a trader and want to stay a trader (or retire young) then you have to trade with the trend. Go with the flow.
I haven't had much time recently to go through the charts, but I plan to catch up on some things this weekend.

All-time high list = bandwidth hog

uglychart.com is approaching its bandwidth limit for the first time and it is only the middle of the month. I have traced part of the problem to the all-time high list, which is posted daily. I may truncate the daily post of the list to show only the first five by volume and allow a link to the full list. If you would like to receive the full list, I may make it available through a daily email. Let me know what you think.

Ugly Picks

Good morning, my name is Ugly, and I am a loser. I have it in me to do serious financial damage to my account.

Dear Diary,
Portfolio picks SRLS and BLKB made new all-time highs yesterday.
Yesterday was also an IBD distribution day for the market, but I would expect a bit of a pullback around the previous highs resistance. A strong break over 2200 on the Nasdaq with volume would be bullish and is what I am looking for. 2200 is a master level chess rating and can also be a point of resistance for chess players as they try to achieve that rank.

Ugly Picks

Good morning, my name is Ugly, and I am a loser. I have it in me to do serious financial damage to my account.

Dear Diary,
The QQQQ traded to a new 3-year high - almost 4.
The XLF is very strong. As is the BBH, which continues its up-trend since breaking out of its range in May.
The IYT is another strong one. I saw these by browsing through the ETF charts page that I created a few months ago.
WBSN traded strongly to a new all-time high and looks good.
TEVA too.
GILD, which closed at a new high, looks like it could go up forever.
IFO - wow! How high can it go?
ARS made a new all-time high. Will it continue? You can bet your arse it will.
I wonder what UTIW will do when it hits the magic number $100.

The all-time high list was off because the database didn't update when I was away - sorry! It is updated now. 153 stocks closed at all-time highs on Friday instead of 28! If you think something may be awry, you can go to this page and it will show you the date that the database was last updated.
