New Orleans abandoned

The mayor says there are most likely thousands dead:

The frightening estimate came as desperation deepened in the city, with gunfire crackling sporadically and looters by the hundreds roaming the streets and ransacking tiny shops and big-box stores alike with seeming impunity.
"We know there is a significant number of dead bodies in the water," and other people dead in attics, Mayor Ray Nagin said. Asked how many, he said: "Minimum, hundreds. Most likely, thousands."
On some of the few roads that were still open, people waved at passing cars with empty water jugs, begging for relief. Hundreds of people appeared to have spent the night on a crippled highway.

Meanwhile, there is a run on the gas stations. Tradermike also posted about it.

Ugly Picks

Good morning, my name is Ugly, and I am a loser. I have it in me to do serious financial damage to my account.

Dear Diary,
Today was a nice follow through day with some more volume and I think it bodes well for the short term at least. I wouldn't be suprised to see the market make new highs starting with this move.
The BBH has a very nice looking chart. I expect it to break over $200 soon.
The OIH and XLE made new all-time highs, while the IWR made a strong move up with huge volume.
The fact that these leading groups were so strong today gives me confidence.
JOYG is another beauty of a stock that has held its 2-year trendline obediently.
CELG keeps rising and has been a good investment, despite the 2000 bubble.
BMHC made a strong move up, which should take it to the magic number $100 at least.
FRK has been a solid investment and moved up strongly because of the hurricane destruction.
Recent IPO ALJ is on fire.
Oh yeah STV - where did you hear it first? That's right, Ugly told you so. I can't brag too loudly, though, because I never bought it for myself. I hope some of you were able to.
EAC looks like a good investment.
NGS is going nuts.

I played paintball for the first time last weekend. I was one of about ten other novices in jeans and a t-shirt who had never played before. There were five or six pros geared up in camouflage, army boots, and their own guns. I enjoyed shooting them the most. But I also got a few welts that later turned into bruises. It was a lot of fun, though, and I can't wait to play again.

Lessons from the stock market samurai (cont'd)

Lesson #4: Mysterious are the ways of action

He, who sees inaction in action, and action in inaction, is wise among traders. He is the stock market Yogi.
Foolish is the trader who trades actively only for activity. Whether waiting patiently for the right time to begin a trade or holding a position until the correct moment to close, doing nothing can often be the wisest thing to do.

Ugly Picks

Good morning, my name is Ugly, and I am a loser. I have it in me to do serious financial damage to my account.

Dear Diary,
FLML continues its move down.
KOMG took a nasty dive, breaking down its trendline and 50-day moving average.
I would keep my eye on URBN at the $50 mark. If the support there doesn't hold, it won't look good.
YHOO is looking weak, too. A break down of $30 and I would expect it to head much lower.
CUTR closed at a new high and looks pretty sweet despite the weakness in the market.
I really like the looks of ARD.
STV just won't quit. Damn, what a nice one.

Quotes from Mark Cook's lecture, 'How to Lose Money Profitably'

From the TAG 21 conference in Las Vegas:

"A great trader who has made tens of millions of dollars from the stock and commodities markets told me the one individual universal reason for failure is the inability to take a loss. This has become my motto, as the true path to riches lies not with the wins, but managing the losses in a prudent, confrontational manner," says Cook.
"The true path to success always must journey through failure. All--and I mean all--the million dollar traders I know had severe losses. And only when they coped with the losses did they achieve true success," Cook said. "The road is long--perhaps five to 10 years. The emotions will sometimes be an obstacle that just plain wins that battle.
"The true winner is the one who perseveres. The race is a marathon and not a sprint. Recognition that all humans fall short of perfect is the first step to the trek to knowing yourself and knowing your limitations.
"However, you must also keep foremost in mind that our God-given talents are very rarely realized to the true extent of the gift.
"Trade and prosper--it is an attainable American dream," Cook said.

Biologists say caloric restriction won't really work

Based on their research, two biologists have concluded that caloric restriction won't greatly increase lifespan in humans. Their opinion is very similar to that of Aubrey De Grey.

"The trade-off between calories and longevity appears to be close to a linear relationship, but the slope isn't very steep," said Phelan, whose model predicts the relationship between calories consumed and life span.
"Longevity is not a trait that exists in isolation; it evolves as part of a complex life history, with a wide range of underpinning physiological mechanisms involving, among other things, chronic disease processes."
For instance, in mice, starvation reduces fertility, which in turn lengthens life span as the animal is not stressed by repeated matings and pregnancies and the associated production of hormones, they said.

Ugly Picks

Good morning, my name is Ugly, and I am a loser. I have it in me to do serious financial damage to my account.

Dear Diary,
Biotech had a nice looking move today.
As for the Nasdaq, it was a nice move up but not totally convincing. We'll see how it follows through.
Looking at the 15-year chart of CVH, you would have no idea that the market topped in 2000.
The chart on SGDE looks really good - it is one of my favorites.
Nice move on LDSH at the end of the day to close at a new all-time high.
JVA hasn't cooled a bit - it must be all of the antioxidants.
Although it is thinly traded, the block trade on Wednesday with today's new high looks promising for PRSC.

Antioxidant Coffee

Muckdog pointed out that it was in the news recently that coffee is America's greatest source of antioxidants.

"Americans get more of their antioxidants from coffee than any other dietary source. Nothing else comes close"
Black tea was the second-leading source of antioxidants in the U.S. diet. Bananas, dry beans and corn placed third, fourth and fifth

Roasting supposedly enhances antioxidant activity and may even give it four times the amount of antioxidants as green tea!
Keep in mind though, that coffee can elevate cholesterol levels while green tea helps lower them. Coffee also has more caffeine than tea: an average 6-oz. cup of green tea contains about 30 mg of caffeine, coffee has about 100 mg per cup.

Ugly Picks

Good morning, my name is Ugly, and I am a loser. I have it in me to do serious financial damage to my account.

Dear Diary,
It looks like it is all down hill from here for FARO.
If PTRY can't hold its 200dma, it would be a major sign of weakness.
TZOO was so hot last year, this year it has been a stinker.
KWK is right at its trendline - time to buy or time to sell?? It is probably a time for one of those. I think it depends on if it can hold the trendline or not.
Lots of weak looking charts out there - nothing I'd like to be buying into.
NOVA, though, had some block trades and a nice looking move on Friday.
SMBI is also a pretty nice looking stock.
STV closed at a new high on Friday, but it didn't look very convincing.

Halloween cosplay costumes

Do you have your Halloween costumes picked out yet? Time is running out and if you want a good costume, you have to plan ahead.
Boingboing.net's Friday Cosplay link reminded me that I am behind schedule this year with my costume and also about how much I like cosplay.
Here is a link to 23798 more cosplay photos.

Ray Barros says market headed down for 2 years

Master trader Ray Barros, CEO of Ray Barros Trading Group, predicts that the markets will be down for two years if the S&P 500 closes a week below 1217, which it did today.
He also goes on to give some advice on trading. He believes the breakdown of a successful trading equation would emphasize only 10% on your trading system, 30% on money management and 60% on psychology.

Wired article on caloric restriction

It warns that if you take caloric restriction too far, you could start to metabolize your own organ meat. Ouch! I would much rather metabolize bio-beer.

Ordered: The Hidden Blade

I tried to order The Hidden Blade from one other online seller, but was denied because it said that the movie could not be exported to the US due to copyright restrictions. However, I tried edaymovie.com and was notified today that the item has been shipped.
But it looks like you can get it pretty cheap on eBay.

Ugly Picks

Good morning, my name is Ugly, and I am a loser. I have it in me to do serious financial damage to my account.

Dear Diary,
Japan has been strong the last couple of weeks.
China, though, is looking weak.
BTUI has a nice looking chart, but it is not making a new all-time high and its earnings growth could be better.
Hmmmmmmm.... RTSX, one of my favorites made a nice little move today. I'd watch that one pretty closely - it looks pretty sweet.
Another favorite, ATLS, closed at a new high.
LIFC is powerful despite the unenergetic market.
JVA is going at it again.
BBSI closed at a new high and looks pretty nice.

Bio-Beer

They say that one to two alcoholic beverages a day promotes health. As if that wasn't good enough, Advaith Biotech has fortified beer with vitamins and nutrients and made it supposedly "protect the body from the harmful effects of alcohol."

Bio-beer was made up of barley malt; Carbondioxide hops extracts and extract of aloe-vera.
Apart from giving the "pleasant feeling" this also protects the liver by improving its function; he said claiming it reduces the blood cholesterol and also maintains the bilirubin levels to normal levels.

The Chushingura expert certification test

The Tokyo-based organization, Chuo Gishikai, is now offering an expert certification test on the Chushingura, the 47 loyal samurai story that occurred over 300 years ago. This famous story is the inspiration of many great samurai movies.

The exam consists of 50 multiple choice and written questions, testing people on their general knowledge of the 47 masterless samurai and the historical events surrounding the incident. Applicants need to correctly answer 40 of the questions correctly during the 90-minute test period to pass.

Dear Diary,
Solid ISRG continues to make new all-time highs.
FLO is another solid stock that doesn't stop rising.
Both of these made new all-time highs.
Portfolio pick UHAL made a new high.
Recent IPO HITT is one to keep your eye on.

For the second time in my life, I am an uncle. My sister just had another son - Rocco. I think the name is pretty funny (in a good way) but my mother doesn't see the humor in it. When my first nephew was born - Kai - I thought it would be a good idea to have him refer to me only as "Uncle Buck." My plan has worked out pretty well as that is the only name he knows me by.

Ugly Picks

Good morning, my name is Ugly, and I am a loser. I have it in me to do serious financial damage to my account.

Dear Diary,
I emailed Mark Cook about his sell signal, which I mentioned before. He said it was quoted from one of his advisories, which he sends out twice daily to day and position traders. He said that, as of this past Tuesday, he had the most bearish signal of his entire 28-year trading career.
Mark is also from Ohio, the heart of it all.
MRK is a dog of a stock. If it ever goes up, I don't think it will be for long.
ADSK, on the other hand, is not and closed Friday at an all-time high.
You can't deny the strength of recent IPO RAIL.
ASEI looks strong.

My flight to Minneapolis was cancelled Friday night because of the NWA strike, so I turned the car around and drove up to NYC to see the premiere of the Summer Samurai series at the Film Forum. Samurai Rebellion was worth the drive, with my favorite actor Toshiro Mifune doing a great job as Isaburo Sasahara, an aging samurai. I think Kurosawa could have shot it better, but Kobayashi did a fine job. One thing that bothered me was that the audience would laugh at parts of the film that were not supposed to be funny. I guess these people had not seen many samurai movies before and so they were not used to, for example, some of the exaggerated facial expressions. But these were times when the movie was trying to communicate a mood - and it wasn't humor. It was annoying, as I was trying to understand the mood but was constantly being distracted by the audience laughing. At some points I felt like saying really loud, over their laughing, "this is not supposed to be funny." I also felt like laughing really loud when the audience was serious and contemplative.

This caloric restriction stuff is hard, at least for me. Sometimes it is as easy as pie - and other times I am raving mad with hunger. That is when I usually brew another jar of green tea, which kind of sickens me enough to make the hunger go away. I love green tea, but jar after jar kind of gets to you.

Control your emotions

Here is a short article that talks about emotions and trading. As Warren Buffet says, "you can't manage money until you can manage your emotions."

"We need to understand our emotions and the way they drive us and make sure we're in control of them," says Friedman. She advises anyone who is about to make a financial decision to go away and think about it before committing themselves.

Kung Fu Master heads to the mountains

Master Yang, "one of the most respected kung fu practitioners in the world," has given up on teaching students in this distracting society and plans to teach in the mountains of California.

"When I come here, I have big hopes -- I say, maybe I can teach foreigners to reach the level. They try. It's not easy. And then finally, I wake up," Yang said in an interview at the spartan offices of YMAA headquarters. "Society is too much a distraction. Their mind cannot concentrate. Their life is not easy. So that's why I say, OK, to train, I need to be like ancient times. Take them to the mountains."
"Take Them to the Mountains" isn't one of those evocative descriptions of a tai chi move, like "Grasp Sparrow's Tail" or "White Crane Spreads its Wings." Yang has sold his publishing company, purchased 240 wooded acres in California's remote Humboldt County, and built a cabin. He has formed a private foundation and, if all goes as planned, two years from now the master will lead a small group of students into the mountains to study. For 10 years.

The market is an amazing thing. There is always something happening. Fortunes are made and lost every day. Not only is something always happening, but something is always about to happen. That's the fun part - trying to guess what is next. And then watching to see what happens.
Every day is a new opportunity, but a big part is waiting patiently for the right moment to make your move.

More on tea and health

I have been reading Dr. Walford's book on caloric restriction in most of my free time (which hasn't been much since the move). It is a good book and pretty convincing. Besides his arguments for caloric restriction, there is a lot of good information about health in general. There is even a section on the chemicals in tea. Although it is not yet proven, he points to evidence that there are a lot of benefits to green tea and recommends it for his CRON (calorie restriction with optimal nutrition) diet. About steeping he says:

It is worth mentioning that steeping tea for three to four minutes is enough to get all the antioxidants in the beverage. Prolonged steeping releases oxalates, a component in three-quarters of kidney stones.

My previous thoughts about tea steeping were "the longer the better." But now I time it to four minutes.
Also, drink jars and jars of green tea every day. He says:

Epidemiologic studies in humans remain equivocal, possibly due to dosages, since over ten cups of tea per day may be required to manifest a significant effect in humans for cancer, for cardiovascular and liver effects, for lowering of cholestrol and triglycerides, and for an increase in HDL.

Mark Dennis Cook says SELL!!!

From businessday.co.za:

"At this juncture I am seeing the potential for the US market to go into a free fall ... THE COOK CUMULATIVE TICK (a tool he developed to determine potential trend movements) is the most overbought since December 1999. I spoke at a conference in New York in February 2000. I warned the crowd that this market was going to get crushed. I had two dozen people walk out on me. I said, if you are in this market get out now ... right now it is the same type of market. It is like the bear rally in 1929 before the October crash."

Kamikaze -vs- suicide bombers

Japan's wartime kamikaze resent comparison with modern suicide bombers because of difference in mission.

"I feel insulted to hear our missions described as the same as Islam's suicide bombings," said the 83-year-old veteran.
"We did this in wartime battle, samurai against samurai, and what they are doing are indiscriminate attacks aimed at killing innocent people," he said, referring to the code-bound samurai knights of medieval Japan.
"For those who carried out the attacks in London or Iraq, there must be their own reasons such as reacting to contempt, an offense or pressure," said Hamazono, a former navy pilot of the Kamikaze Special Attack Force.
"But no one has a right to kill innocent people, especially children," said the 81-year-old veteran, whose lethal mission ended incomplete after his Zero fighter was damaged in a dog-fight just before the end of World War II.
"Terrorist attacks will never bring any happiness to terrorist groups in the end," Hamazono warned in low voice.

Ugly Picks

Good morning, my name is Ugly, and I am a loser. I have it in me to do serious financial damage to my account.

Dear Diary,
I finally made it. There is so much work involved with moving. It is very stressful and stress is very bad for your health. That is why taking the 10-day vipassana meditation course was a great thing to do. At the time I thought I didn't get anything out of it, especially by how poorly I followed the instruction.
I thought I was too down-to-earth for meditation and that it was impractical. Luckily, one of the instructors was very down-to-earth and compassionate and was able to convince me to stay with it.
Meditation is an extremely good tool for traders - and for everyone - as it allows you to control your emotions. Not really control your emotions, but control your actions based on the emotions that you feel. It allows you to think rationally and calmly in the face of panic, fear, or any whirlwind of emotions that can be caused by unexpected events. It can even be used to withstand any amount of pain. For example, check out the monks who set themselves on fire and meditated until their ashes blew away in the wind.
I don't practice meditation enough - I was still completely stressed out with the move.
As for the stock market, it was down on Friday and Monday, so I think this down trend will continue a little more. A breakout above Nasdaq 2200 will be a good buying point as it would be a strong indication that the market will continue higher.
PETS is obeying its 4-year uptrend line and looks to make new highs.
ISRG looks really nice as it makes new highs.
Did you see STV?? Damn. I hope some of you got a piece of it -I didn't.

And by the way, that beat up '90 Honda Civic, loaded down and without a muffler, gave me over 40 miles per gallon on the trip. I was beaming like a proud father every time I filled the tank and calculated the mileage.

Ugly Picks

Good morning, my name is Ugly, and I am a loser. I have it in me to do serious financial damage to my account.

Dear Diary,
QSII did nicely today after its earnings news. It is a solid looking stock.
You might want to keep an eye on recent IPO TBSI - it is pointing up.

There is a saying in the chess world - "All chessplayers should have a hobby" - because it is too easy to get too involved with the game. I was trying to think of a similar quote for traders - maybe "most day traders should keep a job."
Anyway I can see from my recent online chess playing skillz that the stress of my cross-country move is getting in the way of clear thinking. I have used this barometer as a guide to hold off on most trading for now.
I didn't think I would (and I probably don't) have time to go through the charts, but once I start looking, I can't stop. The charts are such pretty little things.
Speaking of pretty charts, Infectious Greed posted a cool chart of inflation adjusted NYSE seat sale prices.

Speaking of Gandhi...

Here is a quote of Gandhi's that would fit well with the recent article, The Christian Paradox, in Harper's Magazine (via maoxian.com):

"I consider western Christianity in its practical working a negation of Christ's Christianity."

Aubrey de Grey's paper on Caloric Restriction

April Smith, who is very kind and has been extremely helpful with my move to Philadelphia and with my questions about caloric restriction, has posted a reply to my inquiry about her thoughts on Aubrey de Grey's belief that caloric restriction will not do much (2 or 3 years) for extending the life span of humans. Aubrey wrote a paper explaining his opinion in detail [pdf]. Michael Rae, Aubrey's research assistant, is a strong supporter of caloric restriction and has written a rebuttal to Aubrey's paper, which has not yet been published.
2 or 3 years by itself might not be worth the suffering of a life with less calories. However, in addition to extending your life and contributing to your health, taking it on as an act of penance might also be spiritually, emotionally, psychologically and even politically beneficial.

Ugly Picks

Good morning, my name is Ugly, and I am a loser. I have it in me to do serious financial damage to my account.

Dear Diary,
Good ol' NTES made a new all-time high. It has been a while. It was the strongest stock in the market for a long time in '03.
Do you guys know TMJ? It sucks and is a huge pain in my jaw. The doctor just says to take some advil and it should go away in a couple of weeks.
ANSS broke out on earnings news and continues its nice, strong uptrend.
STV continues its uptrend. I noticed it in mid-June, but I never bought it.

I am moving this Sunday and Monday from St. Paul, Minnesota to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. I still have a lot of packing left to do. I hope my beat-up 1990 Honda Civic can make it.

The science of Kung Fu

A physicist and a kung fu master team up to demonstrate the physics of breaking a block of wood. Nothing too interesting (I would rather see the physics of balancing on the tip of a bamboo branch as they did in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon), but at least the physicist is pretty cute.

Ugly Picks

Good morning, my name is Ugly, and I am a loser. I have it in me to do serious financial damage to my account.

Dear Diary,
RIV had some nice block trades that look very very sweet. Earnings is in a week.
I think a stock like AMGN is the strongest of the strong right now.
It is stocks like these that make me get up in the morning.
USNA is another sweet looking stock. Although what was with that ball-buster 300k block at the end of the day? I think it has to do with the psychologically important round number $50.
LKQX continues to continue. I like it a lot.
You think these picks look good? You should check out this!

The Nasdaq looks strong as it moved over 2200 with some extra volume.

Aubrey de Grey podcast

I have been reading Dr. Walford's book on caloric restriction and was interested to hear, from his podcast interview, that Aubrey de Grey doesn't really think caloric restriction will work for humans. The interview is 47 minutes in duration and is pretty exciting and wild.

Ugly Picks

Good morning, my name is Ugly, and I am a loser. I have it in me to do serious financial damage to my account.

Dear Diary,
A recent IPO, and lightly traded, but MPAC looks really good, and I'm not just saying that to be nice.
FLIR looks pretty sweet as it breaks out of a range to a new all-time high.
ATLS, back to making new highs, looks awesome. It is one of my favorites.
A lot of my favorites did well today, so I think the Nasdaq will break 2200 eventually.
QSII has done very well for its shareholders and is an awesome stock.
I think BOOM is going to fly soon.
You think these picks look good? You should check out this!

The FXI and BBH are extremely strong.

Chocolate Pudding Up $2 A Barrel

The onion is pretty funny:

The price per barrel of dark sweet chocolate pudding jumped to over $60 Monday as global anxiety continued to drive demand for the delicious after-meal treat.
