April Smith, who is very kind and has been extremely helpful with my move to Philadelphia and with my questions about caloric restriction, has posted a reply to my inquiry about her thoughts on Aubrey de Grey's belief that caloric restriction will not do much (2 or 3 years) for extending the life span of humans. Aubrey wrote a paper explaining his opinion in detail [pdf]. Michael Rae, Aubrey's research assistant, is a strong supporter of caloric restriction and has written a rebuttal to Aubrey's paper, which has not yet been published.
2 or 3 years by itself might not be worth the suffering of a life with less calories. However, in addition to extending your life and contributing to your health, taking it on as an act of penance might also be spiritually, emotionally, psychologically and even politically beneficial.
