Good morning, my name is Ugly, and I am a loser. I have it in me to do serious financial damage to my account.
Dear Diary,
I really like the looks of CUTR, but earnings are tomorrow. The last few stocks I said that about gapped way up on earnings but I don't think it is worth the gamble.
I would say BDE is at least worth watching.
MIDD, up from earnings, looks awesome.

I read an interesting article today about Carl Honore's book, In Praise of Slow, which is about the Slow Movement and opposition to the fast pace of modernity.
It reminds me of a story from one of Jesse Livermore's books about a trend trader who lived secluded in the mountains with no communication from the outside world. The only news he was able to get about the stock market was from a newpaper he would receive a week late - from the week before. Still, he was a very successful trader and was able to make a fortune.
Everyone must find the pace with which they are the most comfortable. But the important thing to note is that the tools you use are not as important as the way that you use them.

I went out with some guys from chess club after the meeting and we got drunk and played some bad chess and when all was said and done, I had bought a hookah from the tobacco store on the corner. It was only because after the third hit from a homeless guy's banana flavored "tobacco," I shattered the glass part of his hookah and so I had to buy him a new one. But the owner of the all-night tobacco store said I could buy one piece for $15 and it would fix the broken hookah, so I bought the piece and now I have my very own hookah, complete with a carrying case.

AMHC continues to continue.
DIOD and LKQX are examples of stocks that made a new high with earnings news and look great.

There was a pretty good article in the San Francisco Chronicle today about the chess players at the Market Street tables. The nice thing about chess is that it doesn't discriminate - age, sex, class and race do not matter. Anyone can win and everyone has an equal shot. So it is often a place where everyone is welcome and respected - even the many psychos and freaks.
"It's like a hub for us," says the self-appointed caretaker, Richard Samaniego. Samaniego, 42, first came to the tables in 1990, after moving up from Fresno...
"It's a good escape," he says. "I make sure everyone feels safe here."

I always check how many shares are owned by insiders. I do this by going to Yahoo Finance, entering the stock symbol and clicking on "Key Statistics" under the "Company" header in the column on the left.
Under the "Share Statistics" heading on the right, you will see "% Held by Insiders."

The higher this number, the better. If many insiders own shares it means they believe in the company (and they should know the most about it) and that they care about the price of the shares.

Dear Diary,
Nice strength today on the Nasdaq. I give it a strong buy if there is a decisive break over 2200. You know, 2200 is a master rating in the United States Chess Federation.
CWTR has been very strong and is making new highs. I sold it in January for a 27% profit.
PRSP looks solid, as always.
The powerhouse NVR is nearing $1000 a share. I wish I would have bought it under a dollar in the early 90's.
That could be a top in ENWV.

Dear Diary,
MCO has been a very good investment as it made a new all-time high today and continues its trend. Earnings are Friday.
HIBB has been another good investment and earnings are in mid August.
BFAM made a new high on good earnings news. It has also been a great investment.
Trends are not unique to the stock market. People are the same way. If someone has demonstrated a habit in the past, it is likely they will continue the trend in the future.
It isn't always the case, but it is most likely.
GIGA was up over 20% today, but then earnings came out after the close and it is down 28% AH.

I have been buying one of these bars every day. They are delicious and healthy and at $0.99 a bar, they are less expensive than all of the other health bars.
Each bar has 5g of fiber, 8g of protein, 2.2g of omega-3 fatty acids, no refined sugar or flour, and only 0.5g of saturated fat.

This is an interview with Jim Rogers from earlier this month about China and its currency. He doesn't know if the yuan is going to go up or down at first, but he is buying nonetheless because he thinks "the renminbi's going to be a big currency, a great currency." He was also apartment shopping in Shanghai, but thinks there will be a hard landing in real estate:
...real estate is where the major speculation has been, and that's where I'd expect the hard landing to center, if you will. It will reverberate out from there, of course. There will be other people who will suffer.
If we suddenly have a bird-flu epidemic throughout Europe, I suspect economies around the world will decline and scare people and commodities will slow down for a while. If Fannie Mae goes bankrupt, it's going to scare people. If China goes to war with Taiwan, it's going to scare people.Something's going to cause consolidations, but buy 'em, don't sell 'em.

For, as a participant, you are the market.
The effect you have on the market may seem insignificant, but it is there.
And as exciting and strange as it may seem, even if you do not trade, your will may be able to move the market. According to the Princeton Engineering Anomalies Research program, out of several million trials, they've detected small but "statistically significant" signs that minds may be able to influence the physical world by intention alone.
I've linked to articles about this before, and here is another. It is difficult not to be skeptical, but it is also extremely fascinating.

TBL, on the other hand, looks very very nice.
MCRI - a good one for this strong market.

Insanity is an interesting thing. For some people it is easy to see that it is only a disease and once they are treated with medication, they are themselves once again. For others, it seems rooted in their core and inseperable from the personality. It can also be hard to judge insanity because of this. One definition of it might be the opposite of reason. Bobby Fischer seems very unreasonable. For example, from his website:
The list of crimes the filthy U.S. -controlled Japanese Ministry of Justice(!) has committed against Bobby starting at about 5:30 p.m. on July 13, 2004 is a depressingly long one and we've delved into many of them in some detail elsewhere on this website. However, there is one crime by the so-called "Ministry of Justice" that has hardly been touched on except briefly in Bobby's Live Radio Interview #30 and that is the fact that alcoholic beverages which are so vitally important to a person's health are strictly banned for Bobby and all of the other unfortunate prisoners at the East Japan Immigration Detention Center, in Ushiku, Ibaraki prefecture, Japan. On the other hand, cigarettes, which of course are pure poison, are freely available in unlimited quantities in the prison and tax free at that! But alcoholic beverages are strictly prohibited! There are only 2 possibilities we can think of: Either the Japanese government is composed of ignorant fools or else they're deliberately trying to debilitate and kill their prisoners. We think the latter is much more likely...

Good morning, my name is Ugly, and I am a loser. I have it in me to do serious financial damage to my account.
Dear Diary,
CAT made a new high today - check out its 15 year up trend.
GOOG made another new high - its first in a month.
URBN made another new high. I emailed URBN, replying to their ad asking for models. They said if I fit the dimensions within ½" I could come in for an interview the next day. I didn't measure myself, but I emailed and said I wouldn't be in town for a month (Philadelphia - by the way, I am moving to Philadelphia) and asked them if they would still need qualified individuals then. I haven't heard back. I started to have daydreams of my career as an Urban Outfitters model.
PPDI looks nice, doesn't it?
TRMB made a new high and has moved out of the atmosphere into outer space, above all resistance. One time in college I was asking around to see if people could name the planets in order. One guy guessed "Trimble" as the second planet from the Sun. He got Mercury right. I thought it was hilarious - where did he get "Trimble?"
SGDE sported a new high on revised earnings guidance.
HANS... *sigh*
A lot of these look good - like DIOD - but earnings are very soon and it is too risky.
I pointed out STV as a favorite to subscribers in mid-June. It is thin but did nicely today.
Maoxian's BBH looks to continue its blast tomorrow as AMGN took off with earnings news.

Jet Li just finished shooting his latest film, Huo Yuanjia, which looks to be his last:
"I stepped into the martial arts movie market when I was only 16. I think I have proved my ability in this field and it won't make sense for me to continue for another five or 10 years. 'Huo Yuanjia' is a conclusion to my life as a martial arts star," Li said recently.
Li also disclosed that the movie's other theme was about the concepts which underpin martial arts. "Many movies blur the line between martial arts and violence. But the fact is that they are completely different. I want to convey to the audience what martial arts means to me -- why do we practice kung fu, what is the essence of martial arts and what are the authentic Chinese martial arts?"
When asked whether Li expected more of "Huo Yuanjia" than of his other movies, Li said that he didn't anticipate any result. "As a Buddhist, I feel satisfied if I have made an effort. The result isn't important," Li said.

A lot of what Mark says about chess can just as easily be said about the stock market. The two are very similar games:
It has creativity, it has stamina. You control the opening, but you can't control the middle game or the end game. You don't actually know what you're going to do.
You need to be creative with your style. You need concentration. It's trying to achieve perfection. It's the best mental battle out there.
You don't get better off of playing. You get better off of studying.
You can't get around without knowing a lot of theory. If you don't study, you're just hoping.
It's not about confidence, but you can't be scared. If you're intimidated, nothing good's going to happen. You need to have strong nerves. It doesn't matter what they do, you play your game.

When I play chess online, the best players are computers. You can tell when you are playing a computer because they have a little (c) next to their username. There isn't incentive to pretend to be a human, while actually playing with a program, because the only thing involved is rating points (although I have been accused of being a computer from an opponent, along with many other things). But with online poker, who knows how many people are really just computer programs? As a programmer, I think it would be much easier (and much more profitable) to write a very good poker-playing program rather than one that beats the best chess players. Here is an article that talks briefly about the subject, indicating that "They Won't Be A Threat To Humans Until They Can Smoke Cigars, Chew Terbacky, And Spit."
That's trickier than chess, which computers mastered when Deep Blue beat human champ Garry Kasparov. Chess is a "perfect information game": Every player knows the position of every piece on the board. Poker is a "misinformation game": You don't know what cards have yet to be dealt or what your opponents are holding, and your opponents are out to trick you.

Mark Cuban writes about the day:
I know my memory isnt perfect on this but I think Todd guessed that we would open and close in the high 20s. I guessed that it would be $34 to $36.
We got to the Nasdaq with the open of the market. Then waited. That was during a period when the order books were so crazed that it took time to sort out the buy and sell orders and figure out where the opening trade would be.
Hours went buy. They seemed like days. For all the confidence we had, there was the natural glimmer of doubt that something could go wrong. And we waited. Through lunch.
Finally, I think it was around 12:30 give or take an hour, the stock opened up.
Sixty Two Dollars and Seventy Five Cents.
For the next 20 minutes or so there was a lot of hi-5ing, champagne corks popping and cellphone calls coming in and out. I remember just leaning against the wall talking to people almost in total shock. I couldnt help but do all the calculations in my head to try to figure out my paper networth and it was beyond belief.

With an 82% on rottentomatoes.com, I decided to see Me and You and Everyone We Know at the local artsy theater last night. This was written and directed by Miranda July, who also starred in the movie. It is definitely not a movie for everyone - and it wasn't great - but there were a couple of scenes that made me laugh harder out loud in a theater than I ever remember doing before. There were some very funny parts, and for that I recommend it.

Arthur L. Caplan, Director of the Center for Bioethics at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, wrote an artcile explaining that "there is no intrinsic ethical reason why we should not try to extend our lives."
Does longer life inevitably mean more social misery and economic havoc? One way to answer this question is to ask whether humankind has adjusted to similar changes in the past. If one compares life for say, the ancient Assyrians, Hebrews, Greeks and Romans with life for Syrians, Israelis, Greeks and Italians today, it would seem that longer life has not brought more misery in its wake. Few could seriously maintain that an average lifespan of 35 years is preferable to the 75 years enjoyed today, even if some spend their final years frail, demented or debilitated. And it would be hard to argue that, despite such very real problems as overpopulation, environmental damage and ageism, the quality of life for the average person has decreased so much from the time of our forebears that we live more poorly or less happily today. Few, in other words, would trade their longer lifespan for the much shorter lives lived by their ancestors thousands of years ago. From healthextension.net
