I usually walk over and around this bridge at the University on my lunch break because it is exactly one quarter of a mile across and I walk three miles. Today as I was walking, a policeman with sirens blaring zoomed over on his motorcycle to the edge of the bridge where a small crowd had gathered. He looked for a moment and drove quickly away. I went over and looked and a student had jumped. Paramedics were bent over him, but it was obvious they could do nothing and then a policeman put a blanket over him. His baseball cap, with the Univsersity logo, was on the grass beside him.
Many people look down on those who commit suicide. They think of them as weak or selfish. I think they are wrong - depression is an illness and those afflicted should be treated with compassion.
