Good morning, my name is Ugly, and I am a loser. I have it in me to do serious financial damage to my account.
Dear Diary,
$100 a barrel? It is heading in that direction. A sure bet? I would say it is possibly probably a sure bet.
LNCR made a new all time high today and has not stopped going up for over 10 years.
3? - no, 30? - no, CVV was up 330% today. Good thing I bought some yesterday - April fools. I wonder what that was like on the floor. Check out the one day chart.
It is a BB stock, but I like the chart on CHAR.
ESLR could break out soon.
GEOI could run a lot more, depending on if it does or not.
Here is a guaranteed way to make money with BASI - buy it at the low of the day and sell it at the high of the day.
ELGX looks like it could be rounding the Horn and heading back down.
If MOBE breaks down $6, I think it will go much lower.
SVR, just born, is dropping into a black hole. Who knows how far to the bottom?
The Nasdaq closed under 2000, above its 200dma, but below its 50dma. I will need to see some volume and some substantial block trades on the QQQQ before I am confident in any move up.

MDKI had a nice move today.
ABAX, super strong in '03, is currently making new 52-wk lows.
ODMO has done nothing but go down since its IPO in Feb - why would it stop now?

Chairman MaoXian sent me the link to the kung fu upward groin slap, which when combined with the Iron Hand technique can inflict death by massive blood loss. However, if you counter with the Iron Crotch technique, your "peach" will probably be okay.
By the way, even though I am a cheap bastard, the MaoXian newsletter is worth a donation.

Hedge fund gurus Steve Cohen and Jim Rogers are cashing in their stocks and buying into the $20 billion-a-year art market. But I don't think they are investing or trading - they are just buying "pretty things."
Steve Cohen has his pickled shark in formaldehyde.
And Jim Rogers buys "perfectly proportioned" nude women sculptures.
Maybe I should start a shark-pickling business.

One of my most unhealthy habits is not getting enough sleep. But how much is enough? I have heard that too much sleep is just as unhealthy. The right amount of sleep is important for staying physically fit and keeping your mind clear and sharp. Lack of sleep has been linked to errors such as "the Challenger disaster, the Chernobyl nuclear reactor meltdown and the Exxon Valdez oil spill." It will certainly cause you to make mistakes with trading and it won't help your sex life.
And if you sleep less, you are more likely to be fat.
After looking into it, it seems that 6-8 hours of sleep per night is ideal for optimal health.

Dear Diary,
PRPX, of the railroads industry, looks like it has a lot of potential. Low average daily volume, but everything else looks great.
I think GOAM should be on the list for day and swing traders, especially with a break over $10.
KMRT looks like it will go up forever.
The market closed weak on Thursday and is bearish. I think it will keep going down until it doesn't. Look for volume. Volume is the strength needed to boost up a weak market. Look for volume combined with and closely followed by prices moving up.

Although it sucks, be thankful if you lose in the stock market, for it humbles you. It is a needed thing to be washed of your vanity every now and then. Take your medicine, but don't give up. And remember your meekness when fortune turns in your favor. By keeping your pride in check, you will have a happier and more realistic view of yourself and life.

Good morning, my name is Ugly, and I am a loser. I have it in me to do serious financial damage to my account.
Dear Diary,
It is thin, but LB touched a new all time high today.
Stick a fork in XPRSA, it had a nice run and it might bounce a bit, but the up trend is broken.
CMTL and PSYS continue to make new highs despite the market.
TRGL is getting killed. You must let your winners run, but you can't fall in love with them and you've got to cut them loose at some point. Kubooo compares them to women: keep them when they treat you good and dump them when they treat you bad. He also had some other hilarious comparisons, one was something like "a stop order is like checking for toilet paper before you sit down to take a shit."
Yes, the market is weak now - but there is no real trend. The time to make the real money is when there is a real trend, like in 2003. Whether up or down, I am eager to see another well defined trend.

Good morning, my name is Ugly, and I am a loser. I have it in me to do serious financial damage to my account.
Dear Diary,
I would be careful buying any breakouts now. I would be watching, shorting or possibly looking to buy a bounce off of support.
Or if you want to daytrade stocks like EDGR, go for it.
But how can you resist to buy a stock like FORD? I guess there is always a stock going up and always a stock going down. Fortunes are made and lost every day.
MEOH, now making new all time highs, bottomed in 2000 as the market peaked.
PRZ is making new highs and looks good.
ULTI, showing strength amidst weakness, is very close to making new all time highs.
GEXA could fly tomorrow or soon - watch it.
I told you to watch USEY, I hope you made a fortune - I made $0 but if you click an ad, I could make about $0.10.
JNPR looks ready to drop.
The way things look now, XMSR could soon go to $20 at least.
Today could be the top for BOOM. It traded to a new high and then closed down with heavy volume.
The turn at the end of the day made things ugly and the Nasdaq finally closed under 2000. I guess to be sure we need to see it stay under 2000 and for the DJIA and S&P 500 to close under their 200dma's also.

WSTL looks like it could be ready to break down.
It is worth noting that as of today IIIN has dropped out of its long time position as the #1 strongest stock in the market, down to #5.

If you want to watch a great man's movie, you should see Breaker Morant. It is based on a true story of soldiers on trial for avenging the death of their friend during the Boer War.
Morant was a polished, well educated English migrant and soon made his mark as a horseman, fighter, thief, bush troubadour, poet, liar, loyal friend and courageous soldier. This rolling stone also was a flamboyant, hard-drinking male chauvinist and dare-devil. If there was a crowd to watch he would attempt the most hair-raising stunts and his talent for breaking horses soon earned him the name The Breaker. He was able to hold his own in any society and at other times brawl with the roughest of the rough in the bush pubs where he often drank to excess. You can read more of the history here (contains spoiler - read it after you see the movie).

I was lucky to get the chance to watch Los Olvidados last night at a theater in Minneapolis that shows great movies that are rarely shown on the big screen. This movie reminded me a lot of City of God because the message was very similar. Even though I really liked the stlye of City of God, I thought that Los Olvidados was put together more simply and more powerfully.
As an added bonus we were shown an alternate ending which was made (but luckily never used) to "soften the blow" with audiences.

Low liquid NICK looks good. It has done almost nothing but go up since its IPO in 1998 - why would it stop now?
CDR is also thinly traded, but looks to make a move up.
The chart on ELOS looks attractive
There were some large blocks of volume thrown around on Friday as the Nasdaq bounced off of 2000. That is to be expected as it is a significant level of support:

By watching this week and next, we will be able to see if it can hold. I think that Stan Weinstein would be bearish since, as Barry L. Ritholtz points out, the Nasdaq advance-decline line is falling.
However, the huge volume looks at least short-term bottomish on the DJIA, as it held support:

Using maggots to treat infection is becoming "bug business," according to this article:
Last year, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved maggots as a "medical device" and Britain has also made them available on prescription within the National Health Service...
Commercial companies already exist in Germany, and the Biosurgical Research Unit at the Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend, Wales -- Britain's sole maggot breeder -- plans to spin off its production operation in April to create a new firm, Zoobiotic, with the backing of venture capitalists.
"We've got big ambitions," said unit head Dr Steve Thomas, who will be technical director of the new firm. "There has been a substantial increase in demand in maggot usage over the last 5 years, and it's growing year by year."

The spring kickball season will be starting soon. Most of the team names are bad, trying to make a poor joke about "balls." I think our team name, "Rubber Toe," is a good one. Another team was named "All your base are belong to us," based on the poor translation from the old Zero Wing game, which I thought was very clever.
The quote from this game has become famous from the All your base video.
I love the new Zero Wing Rhapsody animated rock opera version.

Dear Diary,
So far I have only had one bottle of wine for Ireland, but don't worry I promise to do my part for St. Patrick's day and for Ireland.
I could see MALL dropping to $5 at least.
NFLD is on the verge of breaking its trendline.
NGPS has dropped a lot, but it could go a lot more.
RADN is another candidate to watch for shorting.
I made a lot of money on TRAD in 2003, maybe for luck I should short it now.
XING looks good to short.
My mind can't really grasp ARD right now, after a bottle of wine, but it looks good to me from this perspective. I will have to go over it more closely later.
One of the strongest stocks in the market, WLT, broke out nicely today.
Not much volume, but GDP could be reversing from its 50dma.
LCAV is making new all-time highs.
Under $22.50 will now be a new 20-day low for PARL and maybe I should sell it from the portfolio.
The movie Garden State was not great - a little pretentious - but it has a beautiful soundtrack.

I have been thinking a lot about tea lately, as you have probably noticed. I am starting to believe it is a daily medicine that I can take to prevent and cure any illness - even aging.
Besides green tea, there are a few other teas that are just as healthy:
White tea is an even greener form of green tea. So green, it is white. It is a more rare and expensive form of the same plant. It is picked earlier and supposed to be more fresh and healthy (i.e. more antioxidants).
Rooibos tea is a different plant from Africa. It is a red caffeine-free tea that has many health benefits. It has slightly less antioxidant content than green tea, but "the types of polyphenols in rooibos tea are different than those in green and black teas, so the potential health benefits of the teas cannot be compared solely on their total polyphenol content." It also has low tannin, so it has a milder taste and won't become bitter after long steeping times. "Some people can receive a higher total antioxidant intake from rooibos than from green or black tea because the low tannin content and caffeine-free nature of rooibos allow it to be consumed in larger quantities."
Mate tea is a South American nutritious evergreen with high antioxidant content. I just discovered this one today and a lot of the information on the internet seems to be people trying to sell it, so I am currently trying to sort it all out.

Kasparov writes in the Wall Street Journal about how chess helps players in real life:
I am currently working on a book on how life imitates chess, that will be released this fall in America by Penguin. It examines the unique formulae people use in thinking and problem-solving. For example, the way hope and doubt affect how we process information, or the way we perform in a crisis. I hope it will also serve as a guide to improving these processes...the difference between tactics and strategy; how to train your intuition; and maintaining creativity in an era of analysis...It is obvious that chess is a great training tool for many things, especially for trading.Chess has much to offer the world, especially youngsters who benefit greatly from more disciplined thinking, friendly competition, and learning about the consequences of their decisions. It has been shown in many studies that children exposed to chess perform better on exams and are, even, better behaved. It stimulates the powers of imagination and calculation and also improves concentration.

While Bobby Fischer waits in jail in Tokyo to be sent to prison in the USA - for tax evasion - Gary Kasparov, the best player in the world for the last 20 years, is retiring and going into politics.
Meanwhile, I am reading Estonian Grandmaster Jaan Ehlvest's book, The Story of a Chess Player, that the publisher was kind enough to send to me for review. I have only just begun going through it, but you can read a nice review at chessbase.com for now. It looks like the book allows you to understand more about the life of a great chess player, rather than just an analysis of his games.

While you are sipping your well-steeped green tea, full of antioxidants to help you gracefully weather the effects of aging, consider that you may live to be 1000. It sounds ridiculous, strange and perhaps unethical - but it is extremely interesting.
On a lighter but no less gripping note, de Greys timescale presents a nice problem for a very spoilt generation, the babyboomers. This population bulge, caused by the increasing number of births after the second world war, covers people aged roughly between 50 and 60. If it is to be 30 years before immortality technology becomes available, this most pampered generation in human history might also be the last generation to die. They got their decaff lattes but they didnt get eternal life. It is hard not to laugh.
...Ray Kurzweil and Terry Grossman are babyboomers in their mid-fifties and both have decided they want to live for ever. Their book describing how to do it Fantastic Voyage: Live Long Enough to Live Forever is to be published here in May.
At the bottom of the article is a hilarious "13-Step Appleyard Programme" about how to live long enough to live forever.

While visiting a friend in Chicago, I learned that he only steeps his green tea for about 30 seconds. I steep my tea for several minutes because I assumed this would suck most of the antioxidants out of the green tea leaves. He does not like the bitter taste of the longer steeped tea.
I looked into it and found out that you can decaffeinate tea by steeping it for 45 seconds, pouring out the water and steeping the tea for drinking as usual. This will eliminate 80% of the caffeine while retaining 95% of the polyphenols. You can read much more about how tea is decaffeinated here.
I might be able to inversely assume that my friend is leaving 95% of the polyphenols in the tea by steeping it for the short period of time.
But by looking further I found that "tea with caffeine has slightly more antioxidants activity" and that you should "steep tea leaves or bags in hot water 3 to 5 minutes to thoroughly release antioxidants" at aumtea.com
