Ugly Picks

Good morning, my name is Ugly, and I am a loser. I have it in me to do serious financial damage to my account.

Dear Diary,
DCAI popped. I knew it would but I didn't do anything about it. I blame these missed opportunities on my job. I could have put in an order to buy at its breakout automatically, so I really don't have excuses. But if I didn't have a full time job, I wouldn't have to spread my time and energy so thin and could focus on the market. I would be able to completely concentrate all of my power to lose all of my money as quickly and efficiently as possible.
TOPT looks good.
RMI performed nicely today and looks good.
The chart and small float on DSTI looks appetizing.
MSB made a new high and looks good.
I was stopped out of ESLR, but it made a new high today.
I really like BXG which also made a new high.

Ouch, TGA holders felt the pain today.

Let me just take a moment to say how much I truly love frugalgirl's blog.

Master of the Flying Guillotine (1975)

If you want to see the quintessential dubbed over kung fu movie from the seventies - watch Master of the Flying Guillotine. It is great. Nothing more than the basic vengeance plot and lots of kung fu, finished off by the final climax fight scene. You have to see some of the amazing things these kung fu masters can do (e.g. stretch arms out 6 feet to punch). A movie like this is great to watch for a look at the genre's style and not to be taken too seriously. It is a "bad" kung fu movie that is good.

Ugly Picks

Good morning, my name is Ugly, and I am a loser. I have it in me to do serious financial damage to my account.

After laying low for the last couple of months, the strongest stock in the market, IIIN, looks very good.
Another from the same industry, RESC, is making new all-time highs.
XXIA continues to show strength.
BOOM was up about 28% on Friday, but I think it could fly a lot further and is one to watch like a hawk. The float is 2.2 million, but over 4.6 million shares were traded Friday.
PRFT looks good.

AIRT has a head and shoulders looking chart and would be a short.
ASTM looks weak, stick a fork in it.

Let me just take a moment to say how much I truly love MuckDog's blog.

How to start your own stock market kung fu blog

The easy way:
Create an account at blogger and begin (there are other free blogging services, if you prefer).
Your domain name will be [something].blogspot.com, so to be more cool you can purchase a domain name at yahoo for only $4.98/year. Simply forward it to your blogspot address.
The better way:
If you want to do more (e.g. have a database, dynamic pages, email accounts, etc...), you can get a web hosting plan. Examples of what you can do with this are the discussion board, ugly picks page, stock screener, portfolio, and the barchart charts page. You can do this through yahoo, but it is much more pricey and not worth it. I suggest getting it through me - I do a reseller program with my web hosting service company. I will give you $5 off of the already very low price that they mention on their website. So for only $55/year, you get more than enough to keep you busy - check out everything they have to offer. If you are interested, send me an email.
Once you have your own hosting plan, you can connect it to blogger and get started.

If you have questions, let me know.

Ugly Picks

Good morning, my name is Ugly, and I am a loser. I have it in me to do serious financial damage to my account.

I think YELL will go to $100.
GMXR is back over $10 with earnings news and it about to make new all time highs.
SFCC, also with earnings news, continues to continue.
Recent IPO PUMP looks, of course, pumped.
Here is another 100% sure bet - TONS to $100.

To make money, one can short ASKJ.

Sexy Women Chess Players

Carmen Kass is not only one of the top ten paid supermodels in the world, she is also the president of the Estonian Chess Federation. She lives in New York, but she is considering running for the European Parliament.

Maria Manakova, the "Anna Kournikova of chess," poses nude in magazines and comes to tournaments in skimpy clothing. She was women's champion of Yugoslavia and ranked in the top 20 women in the world in the 1990s.

In a recent interview she poured scorn on female players in "dirty, baggy trousers", urging them to wear miniskirts instead to attract sponsors.

Asimo!

Asimo, the "world's most advanced humanoid robot," is giving shows here at the Univeristy of Minnesota today through Saturday before heading to Purdue and CSU Sacramento. I am excited to see Honda's 4 feet tall, 120 pound creation and will make it tomorrow or Saturday and let you know what the little bugger is like. Professor Okyay Kaynak believes that robots will win the World Cup in as little as 50 years.

Ugly Picks

Good morning, my name is Ugly, and I am a loser. I have it in me to do serious financial damage to my account.

EVST broke out over $10 and is a play for swing and day traders.
SAFT has only gone up since its IPO a couple of years ago, why would it stop now?
CIB and KWK are approaching new all-time highs.

NVTL is taking a dive.
It looks like good timing to short STKL.
FWHT could break down ay any moment.
And if ULTI breaks down its 200dma, I would short it - especially with continued weakness in the market.

The Nasdaq made a bearish CCI cross below -100 and is pointing towards 2000.

Ugly Picks

Good morning, my name is Ugly, and I am a loser. I have it in me to do serious financial damage to my account.

TGA gapped way up and then closed near its low for the day. It might be time to tighten the stop on that one.
If the market were stronger, I would be tempted with the recent activity in DCAI.
Someone wasn't pleased with the news on SIM and so it bit the dust but managed to hold its 50dma for now - but probably not for long.
If I were going to buy anything tomorrow, it would be BRY.

ABAX looks like it has a good chance to go much lower.
So does FHRX.
So does FOSL, because earnings just weren't good enough.
CALM broke down $10 and is a strong short.
It looks like the tide is turning for GIVN.
I would not be surprised to see NGPS drop back below $10 or even under $5.
And SIRI looks certain to go back down to its 200dma or lower.

Right now I would feel confident shorting in anticipation of a breakdown of Nasdaq 2000. But it is safer to wait until it happens. The only bad thing about the Nasdaq breaking down is that it will make it harder on AAPL to go to $100 and I could lose my bet with Chairman MaoXian.

Delicious Light Sweet Crude Oil

Oil bursted up over $50 a barrel for a new 3-month high and looks like a good buy.
A very weak day for the stock market and a great day for oil.
As I've said before, the trendline and the 200dma meet at the psychologically important round number 2000.

There were some substantial block trades on the QQQQ in the last hour of trading that should be noted.

Chushingura (1962)

There is almost nothing more exciting to me than sitting down to a samurai movie that I have never seen before and that I know will be good. Especially one with Toshiro Mifune or directed by Akira Kurosawa (and lately Yoji Yamada). There is a limited supply of these movies and it was nice to feel the excitement again with Chushingura. Mifune only plays a small part in this 207 minute film, but it is a great movie based on the famous Japanese historic tale of the loyal 47 samurai. If you want to truly understand the samurai spirit, especially its emphasis on loyalty - watch this movie.
I had also seen the earlier 1941 version of the same story (241 minutes), which is very similar and just as good if not better. Supposedly, this movie was more or less forced on the director (Mizoguchi) and his studios by a "government that was taking increasing control of film production and mandating a cinema that would inspire loyalty among the people as the country sank deeper into World War II."

Ugly Picks

Good morning, my name is Ugly, and I am a loser. I have it in me to do serious financial damage to my account.

Thundersforever, a frequent commenter on this blog, points out EENC which made a new all time high by breaking out over $20.
Recent IPO PUMP also moved over $20 and looks ready to make new highs.
SONC closed at a new all time high and looks like a safe one to buy and put away for years.
One of my favorites, SIM, had a nice volume surge on Friday.
TIN is making new all time highs and looks to surely go to $100.
TGA was up over 8% Friday because of a positive mention on uglychart.com the night before.
Everything about BRY looks very attractive to me. However it more risky to buy right before its earnings news, which was delayed.
VLO looks good to stick in the retirement account.

ALDN broke down through its 200dma and looks weak and good timing to short.
ERICY and FARO should also be watched for a breakdown.
Ouch! NAVR looks to be biting the dust.
MALL, dumped on bad news, looks to go lower.

The market is closed tomorrow for president's day, have a good day off.

Let me just take a moment to say how much I truly love Paul Kedrosky's blog.

Shaolin Soccer (2001)

Shaolin Soccer is a pretty funny movie. After watching Stephen Chow in the Chinese box office hit Kung Fu Hustle, I decided to borrow his other highly recommended movie from the library. It is also a kung fu comedy that is well done and has quite a few scenes that made me laugh out loud.

AAPL to $10000

I took out a second mortgage on the house and loaded up on AAPL shares since it is an absolute sure bet to $100. (The previous sentence contained sarcasm)
There is much more than money involved (in fact, I think there is $0 involved) in this battle of the egos. Mr. Chairman doesn't think it will get there.
I am only 99.5% sure now.
The good thing for me is that if it doesn't get to $100 in the next five years, I can always say that it will eventually and I was thinking long term (like the next 100-1000 years). But if it goes to $100 within the next few months, I win hands down.

Ugly Picks

Good morning, my name is Ugly, and I am a loser. I have it in me to do serious financial damage to my account.

Recent IPO GPRO broke out over $50 for a new high. It looks like a good one.
Also at the $50 mark is ORLY, which has done nothing but go up since it IPO'ed about 10 years ago. Why would it stop now?
I am not going to even mention PNRA because everyone else is going to anyway. That is what happened the last time I mentioned it.
UTIW looks hott (with two t's).
PDC is worth watching.
And TGA made another new high and looks good.

It may be good timing to short ABRX and JNPR.
It also looks like APOL is turning around and heading back down.
I think SONS is a good short right under its 200dma.
I think XING has more downside.

The Nasdaq reversing from its 50dma looks weak. It has to break through it to go any higher. Now it looks like the volume blocks on the QQQQ from Tuesday are bearish and were the big guys selling at the 50dma.

The Hidden Blade (2004)

I am extremely excited to see The Hidden Blade, directed by Yoji Yamada - who also did one of my favorites, the Twilight Samurai. I love watching a trailer and getting goosebumps. Rottentomatoes and imdb.com had nothing about it, but kungfucinema.com has a nice collection of images, description and review, links, etc... I have been using kungfucinema.com more and more. The only thing I don't like is that the descriptions can sometimes spoil the movie by giving it all away. I prefer to know as little as possible before watching.

More Warren Buffet gossip

I admire the fact that "Buffett's investment strategy mirrors his lifestyle and overall philosophy. He doesn't collect houses or cars or works of art, and he disdains companies that waste money on such extravagances as limousines, private dining rooms, and high-priced real estate. He is a creature of habit -- same house, same office, same city, same soda -- and dislikes change" (via fool.com).
I don't think he would buy a rotting shark for $12 million.
He has an interesting relationship with his wife and girlfriend:

Susie moved out shortly after the couple's 25th wedding anniversary. She even set her husband up with other women, including Astrid Menks, a waitress at the French Cafe who ended up moving in and still lives with Buffett. While Susie and Warren remain close, Astrid is his daily companion, though Susie still accompanies him on trips to New York and California and sits on Berkshire's board. Susie and Astrid are friends; they send presents to relatives from "Warren, Susie and Astrid."
His children are not spoiled:
Critical of the self-indulgence of the super-rich, Buffett thinks of inheritances as "privately funded food stamps" that keep children of the rich from leading normal, independent lives. With his own three kids, he gave them each $10,000 a year -- the tax-deductible limit -- at Christmas. When he gave them a loan, they had to sign a written agreement. When his daughter, also named Susie like her mother, needed $20 to park at the airport, he made her write him a check for it.
And he issued a "nuclear alert":
Warren Buffett, the stock market guru known as the Sage of Omaha, says that businesses and insurers should prepare themselves for a nuclear attack by terrorists.

Howard Buffet - photojournalist, philanthropist and son

I didn't know that Warren Buffet's son, Howard, was a famed photojournalist. He also donates a lot of money, but I believe this is set up by Warren:

Mr. Buffett created a second, much smaller, private foundation in 1990 in order to allow members of his extended family to make gifts of their own.
Each year, this fund -- the Sherwood Foundation, named for the forest in the Robin Hood legend -- allows each of the following to distribute up to $100,000 to the charities of their choice: Mr. Buffett's daughter, Susie; his sons, Howard and Peter; his sister, Doris Bryant; and Astrid Menks, a long-time friend.

Ugly Picks

Good morning, my name is Ugly, and I am a loser. I have it in me to do serious financial damage to my account.

EPAY had a strong move today and looks to make new highs soon.
ROV raised guidance and looks good, but I prefer a move like this on no news.
Do you want an absolute 100% sure bet? Buy AAPL now and sell it at $100, which it will without a doubt trade to. I am going to will it there.

The following shorts are for watching and I wouldn't short unless the market became weak.
KERX looks good to short if it can't hold its 50dma.
TZOO is under its 200dma and if it can't hold $50, thing could get ugly fast.

Yesterday was great, but today the portfolio got slammed. PARL closed under its 50dma and is close to being stopped out. WCG dumped on earnings news.

QQQQ volume

There was heavy volume on the QQQQ today as it broke above $38 and bounced back from near its 50dma. There were quite a few significant block trades throughout the day. It is important to note and has meaning which will become more clear as time progresses. Although it was a choppy day, I think it is bullish. It looks like today is a follow through of the volume I mentioned a few days ago. It will be more clear as the QQQQ either breaks above its 50dma or moves back to $37.

The universe is one and we are one with it

I just read an amazing and unbelievable article about how respected scientists from around the world have collected evidence that shows how we are all one with the universe, that we can physically affect anything else in the universe, no matter the distance - and that we can predict the future.
Another article states that this evidence could be an explanation of the mysterious nature of quantum mechanics - "that the mere observation of subatomic particles can affect how they behave."
For the stock market samurai, this is further evidence that the market, as a collective unconscious, can be predicted and that it can even be willed in the direction we wish.

The machine apparently sensed the September 11 attacks on the World Trade Centre four hours before they happened... it also appeared to forewarn of the Asian tsunami just before the deep sea earthquake that precipitated the epic tragedy.

...the volunteers do not even have to be in the same room with the REG. The lab in Princeton has produced results from volunteers as far away as Hungary and Brazil that are the same as those who are sitting just a few feet from the machine. Distance is irrelevant.

The emotion of love seems to have a more powerful effect.

Ugly Picks

Good morning, my name is Ugly, and I am a loser. I have it in me to do serious financial damage to my account.

Today was a good day for the portfolio, with TRGL, HANS and the newly added TSRA all performing nicely. TRGL moved into the #2 slot for the top 100 stocks in the market - can we get #1?

CNXS is making new highs and looks good.
Lightly traded CMPP broke out of a narrow range and should be noted.
AMXC broke out to a new high.
UUU has only 1M float and is lightly traded, but it could move up quickly.
Keep your eyes on DCAI and SIM - they could make a move soon.

Good morning, my name is Ugly, and I am a loser. I have it in me to do serious financial damage to my account.

PHLY, up on earnings news, looks like a good investment.
TSRA looks ready to breakout - I think it will move higher soon.
RMCF, which has followed a solid up trend line since the beginning of '03, was up Friday on good CNBC news. I prefer a move like this with no news, but I really like RMCF.
Some block trades on recent IPO HURN look promising.
And very recent IPO, NATL, looks good also, although it only just started so the chart is small.
HYDL made a new all time high and looks very good.
The block trade and run up in price at the end of the day Friday for portfolio pick WCG looks very good.

I think you can stick a fork in ASTM.

The meaning of the block trades on the QQQQ from Thursday are becoming more clear based on Friday's rally. It is bullish and could be moving back up to make new highs. Before it does, it will need to close above $38 and its 50dma.

I saw the documentary Monterey Pop this weekend, directed by D.A. Pennebaker, who also made Don't Look Back about Bob Dylan (which is also good). I think it was a fascinating glimpse of the unique culture of the 1960's in the USA. It also inspired me to part my hair on the other side and to go to the thrift store and buy some corduroy pants and two $4 (half-off) "retro" sweaters.

Steve Cohen's rotting shark

Do you guys remember Steve Cohen from Jack Schwager's book Stock Market Wizards? Personally, I remember being the most impressed with him out of all the other "wizards" from that book. Well, I read via fark that his $12 million piece of art is rotting. Not a very good investment if you ask me.
My heroes are the occasional janitor I read about in the news who accidentally throw away an expensive piece of "art" because they mistake it for garbage.
In my ceramics class yesterday, we had to make a clay hand and critique others' hands in small groups. I prefer and understand the simple things, like pots or dishes, but when it comes to sculptures and pieces of art that have no purpose but to look at, I am lost and it actually gets on my nerves. I was forced to critique another's hand and so I told him, "I can see your sadness."

Here is an interesting short article about the politics and business surrounding Shaolin Temple.

The temple's leaders say they have had enough of this debasement and have persuaded the Chinese government to declare the name a recognized brand, protecting it under the rules of the World Trade Organization...
"All across history, Shaolin Temple has served the emperors," said Liang Yiquan, 74, the director of the nearby Shaolin Epo Martial Arts School. "Now they serve the Communist Party. There's a political element to it."

Volume block trades on the QQQQ and YHOO

The QQQQ had a pretty significant 3 million share block trade at the end of the day and YHOO had some heavy volume as it dipped below its 200dma at the low of the day earlier this morning. Good morning, my name is Ugly, and I am a loser. I have it in me to do serious financial damage to my account.

STNR has a pretty steady up trend and looks like it might make some new all-time highs soon.
USNA broke out to new highs with good earnings news.
And I mentioned TRGL.
Similar stocks, GDP and RES, look good to me also.

Will YHOO trade under its 200dma for the first time since Oct '02? I think so. It will be worth watching - kind of like when you are driving and notice that your odometer is about to flip to a new round number.

SNIC is one to watch for shorting.
I think the timing is right to short TACT.

As you can see from the chart of the Nasdaq, the 200dma and the trendline meet at about the psychologically important round number 2000. A lot of people are going to be watching to see what happens here:

Forbidden Chess

The Taliban had strictly forbidden the game of chess in Afghanistan, but there was recently a tournament in Kabul. And in Iraq, it looks like the Shia leader Grand Ayatollah Ali al-Sistani - "the most powerful man in Iraq" - will win the election and so chess in Iraq will also be forbidden. It used to be forbidden in Iran, but now it is "blossoming." Supposedly it was banned because the Ayatollah Khomeini said "it hurts memory and may cause brain damage."
The USSR banned blindfold chess in the 1930's because "it was too taxing and led to mental sickness or even death."
Here is more history of chess bannings and condemnations:

Chess was condemned and forbidden by the Eastern Orthodox Church in 1093. Rabbi Maimonides included chess among forbidden games. Bishop of Paris Odo Sully banned chess from the clergy in 1195. King Louis IX forbid chess as a useless and boring game in 1254. King Charles V prohibited chess in France in 1375. Ivan IV of Russia banned chess and labeled it a pastime of Hellenic deviltry in 1551.

Good morning, my name is Ugly, and I am a loser. I have it in me to do serious financial damage to my account.

STST looks good.
ASR had a nice move today to a new high and is worth watching.
BMHC is a good, strong stock. I would like to own it, but I prefer to buy moves like this on no news.
It should be noted that AAPL made another new all-time high.

HANS got the sh@t kicked out of it today, but has not yet broken its trendline. A big down move like that, though, could do it. It would not be as much fun cutting a winner like HANS from the portfolio as it is losers like BWLD. I like cutting out the red and leaving the green, but when it's time to step up to the plate, you've got to swing the bat.
Day and swing traders can watch for the time to short DDDC.

Watch $10 on CALM - if it breaks, it will calm down.
In this case, the large block trade today on FLML looks bad to me, and I think the timing may be right to short it now.

Let me just take a moment to say how much I truly love Kaushik Gala's blog.

The Art of Loving

There are only a few things more difficult and rewarding than the stock market. Love is one of them. The Art of Loving by Erich Fromm is a book that changed the way I think about love. I would recommend this one first above all of the other books. It is a short read and great timing for Valentine's Day.

From the portfolio...

From the portfolio, HANS is getting a deep gash after its recent run-up.
I was stopped out of the dog BWLD today. I love letting losers like that go.
And PARL is approaching 100% profit after its earnings news this morning.

Ugly Picks

Good morning, my name is Ugly, and I am a loser. I have it in me to do serious financial damage to my account.

ANGO looks good and I think it could go a lot higher. I would call it a strong buy.
ANTP bounced off of its 50dma with good news today. Shorts scramble to cover.
The chart on MANC looks really nice now that it is moving back up to its recent breakout high.
DCAI looks like a good time to buy.
One of my favorites, SIM, looks as strong as I think it should be.
I think it is possible to make money by patiently waiting and watching ORCT for the time to short and then shorting it. If that is your style - it is not mine.

I think VIDE is one to short if it drops below its 50dma again.
Time to short the Chinese Internet stocks again, SOHU, NTES and SINA as they dump on earnings news.

Let me just take a moment to say how much I truly love Jaloti's blog.

Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son

Fourteen year-old Vietnamese International Grandmaster Nguyen Ngoc Truong Son is making headlines as a chess prodigy and the second youngest person ever to become a grandmaster. He was also Vietnam's athlete of the year.
He is a great surprise to his parents, who earn less the US$100/month.
However, Mig Greengard, in his very interesting Daily Dirt Chess Blog (also check out his chessninja.com website) says you can't compare him to Fischer or Judit Polgar:

This doesn't mean he isn't a great prospect or that getting a GM title is trivial other than relative to 20 years ago. (More on that later.) But comparing these kids to Fischer and Judit Polgar, who were regularly playing and beating world-class GMs at 14, is way off the mark. Bu Xiangzhi, a brief "youngest ever" who also got his norms in somewhat contrived fashion, is now 19 and isn't currently in the top 100.

Wilbur Ross

Jim Rogers is not the only one keen to commodities. Wilbur Ross, a.k.a. the "Commodity King," agrees the bull market is in "stuff":

Ross's investing theory is that trade liberalization will lead to rising living standards in the developing world--and increased demand for commodities. "Hard metals, energy sources, and things of that sort are all going to be very much in demand for quite some time," he says. "Those are industries that have historically not attracted that much capital, haven't been that appealing to hotshot managers, and tend to be very fragmented. For people like us, those are very exciting characteristics."

"I think China is the most amazing industrial revolution the world has ever seen," he says. "We're at the very early stages of China's expansion." With its insatiable demand for coal and steel, as well as its massive pool of textile workers and consumers, China figures prominently in his investment strategies.

Ugly Picks

Good morning, my name is Ugly, and I am a loser. I have it in me to do serious financial damage to my account.

TEAM has low liquidity, but the breakout on Friday looks nice.
WSTF also has low liquidity, but I like the chart.
LCBM has been very strong recently.
Yes, tobacco looks good based on Friday. But if you don't feel comfortable buying tobacco (like me) because it causes cancer and targets teenage girls - you can buy RESP, which made a new all-time high and will surely profit from caring for all of the emphysema patients. I think it looks good to stick in the IRA for a while.
Ugly Pick XXIA broke out based on good earnings news and looks like it will go higher.
And I don't think TONS will stop until it gets to 100 at least. And maybe it will go much further, especially if Jim Rogers is right about this just being the start of the bull market in Hot Commodities. Although TONS has been one of my favorites since it broke out at the end of November, I still have yet to own it! Argh!
BEBE made a new all-time high and looks pretty good.

ASKJ looks weak after the market was disappointed with its earnings news on Friday. It may be a good time to short, even if it is going to buy Bloglines.
I think timing may be right to short
