My Healthy Life

The doctor gave me the results of a recent cholestrol test and he said "You are going to live to be 200. (ha ha ha)."
"You have the lowest cholestrol that I have seen for someone without an eating disorder." (He assumed I didn't have an eating disorder.)
"Are you a vegetarian?"

No, I am not. But these are my healthy habits:
1) 1 ounce of nuts per day
2) tomatoes daily
3) leafy greens daily
4) only whole grains
5) no refined sugar
6) green tea daily
7) exercise daily
8) fruits
9) dairy
10) fish weekly

These are my most unhealthy habits:
1) not enough sleep
2) getting drunk
3) getting stressed out
4) not enough stretching
5) not doing enough to help the poor and suffering people in the world

Watchables

My kickball team, "Rubber Toe," lost our division championship game tonight by one point. We even had the bases loaded and no outs, damnit.
Well, there is always fall season.
I called in and was on NPR asking a question on the program "Here on Earth" this past Sunday. It felt satisfying to hear myself broadcast nationally.
You can hear me at http://clipcast.wpr.org:8080/ramgen/wpr/hoe/hoe040627k.rm
I will probably post one of my finished trades soon as the low of the day on the stock I own was exactly 0.02 above my stop.

Watch AIRT if you aren't already. It is just fun to watch.

If you can make money on the stock market the fair way (no insider info, no illegal manipulation of price, etc..) then you are one of the lucky few.
You are taking the crumbs left over from the people who trade the unfair way.

I am hoping to quit my job within five years and only trade stocks. I know a lot of people want to do that and only a small few ever can successfully, but I am a genius and so I should be okay.

Beauty Contest

I thought this was a good quote for my blog:

"Speculation is like being a judge in a beauty contest where the objective is not to pick the prettiest girl, but the girl the other judges pick."

The Library

Why would anyone in their right mind rent a movie from Blockbuster? What is it, like $5 for two days? Give me a goddamned break. You have to be kidding me. And you can't even search an online database of movies or put anything on hold.
The local library is:
1) free
2) you can put movies on hold
3) you get it for a week
4) you can renew
5) you can search everything and put holds on items online
6) you can have items transferred to your local branch

And that's the same for Netflix.

Beheading is the latest new fad

Suicide bombing is soooo 2003.
And now everyone can watch the beheading right from their own homes via the internet.
I downloaded and saw the beheading of Nicolas Berg. It was really a horrible thing to see and I couldn't get it out of my head for days. It depressed me to see that someone could do that to another human being.

Fahrenheit 9/11

I am looking forward to seeing this.

I am also looking forward to seeing this, which I recently bought because none of the libraries around had it.

By the way, in the article I linked to at the bottom they mention the final fight scene in Sanjuro. To me, that is the greatest fight scene I have ever seen and I recommend everyone to watch Sanjuro.

Day traders

I work during the day, so I don't daytrade anymore. Plus, I seem to do better by not daytrading. It is difficult to do. But if you can do it right, you can make a lot of money in a short amount of time. If you can come up with a system, like any other system, that has a good risk-to-reward ratio then you should be ok.

Here is an interesting article.

Basically I think you are more susceptible to getting screwed by manipulation of stock prices and screwing yourself by becoming too emotionally involved.

But as long as you understand this, and define your risk, you can probably get it to work for you.

Watchable Stocks

FTHR is the only one based on Friday's action that stands out.
However, I will look over all of the past watchable stocks and come up with a new list to post by excluding anything that is not performing well.
Basically, I just find a stock breaking out from a long base and buy it and accumulate shares until it breaks its trendline.
I would post my exact trades, but I am paranoid that a NYSE specialist or Nasdaq Market Maker or someone with a lot of money will manipulate me out of my money based on what I post.
I will post my exact trades after I have sold out of a position. Maybe in the future I will have a separate subscription part of the site that shows my current trades.

Good time to short sell?

The charts look like it is a good time to sell short. Your stop could be tight and your risk low. It looks like a good risk-to-reward ratio at this point, as long as you keep your position size under control. Just make your position large enough and your stop tight enough so that if you are stopped out, the most you will lose is 2% of your investment capital.
A good stop would be just above the mid-term high of yesterday or the day before.
If you are not going to trade the indexes, then trade a stock that has a similar chart pattern to the index or one that is breaking down key support.
Personally, I am actually long and on margin because one of my stocks refuses to break its rising trend line. And that is fine with me.
You hear of how risky it is to trade on margin, and yes it is more risky. But you have to learn how to cap your risk even if you don't trade with margin. My max loss is 2% of my investment capital. I am currently up about 50% on this trade alone, which would have only been a 2% loss for me if it had started the other way.
You need a system with a good risk-to-reward ratio. Once you have one, stick to it.

Why most people lose money in the market

Because there is a ton of manipulation and cheating.
The NYSE specialists manipulate the price. The Nasdaq Market Makers manipulate the price. Insiders manipulate the price. Mutual fund and hedge fund big money managers manipulate the price.
What chance does the little guy have?
Not much. Sometimes they can get lucky. And sometimes they can outsmart the other fish.
But it is important to realize that they are out to get your money. You must understand that you are in a David and Goliath type situation.
There are many sharks lurking in these waters.

Good Books

I am reading "The New Market Wizards : Conversations with America's Top Traders" - it is a good book. Although most don't give away their systems, the interviewed pros drop enough general tips and hints to give you a very good idea of what you need to be to become a great trader.
Also, these are some great books that I've read:

Stock Market Wizards : Interviews with America's Top Stock Traders
How I Made 2,000,000 in the Stock Market by Nicolas Darvas
Stan Weinstein's Secrets For Profiting in Bull and Bear Markets
Jesse Livermore: The World's Greatest Stock Trader by Richard Smitten
How to Trade in Stocks by Jesse Livermore

You need to put time into it and study if you want to become good enough to make money in the market. And it is a lot easier to put so much time into it if you truly enjoy it.

Stock predictions

Predicting a stock's movement from the charts is like trying to forecast the weather based on radar. You can make a pretty good guess for the near future, but you can never be absolutely sure. No matter how certain the conditions look, you will be wrong sometimes. You have to understand that there is risk of being incorrect in every call you make. You are just making your best guess.
So the key to winning in the market, I think, relies much more on how you handle the risk you are taking. You have to come up with a good risk to reward ratio.

My trades for this year

I have only made 54 trades so far this year.
That is good.
Even though I made over 400% last year, I made way too many trades which adds up at $10.99/trade. And it just makes me trade worse anyway. So, starting this year in March I have adopted a new system of fewer trades and much less risk. At one point last year I was up over 600%, but I put on too much risk and lost a lot of money.
Managing risk is the key.
I no longer trade during the day. I put in orders to buy and stop orders to sell at home after the market is closed. This causes me less stress, allows me to perform my job duties better, allows me to trade more rationally and overall is just good.
This year I am up about 50%. My goal is 100% per year. I don't know if that is acheivable, but any percent over 5% is good enough for me.
