Iron Man (2008)

Sunday, May 18th, 2008

Iron Man I became very interested in seeing Iron Man when I saw that it was rated 94% on rottentomatoes - making it one of the highest rated movies for the year. I thought it was really good - I wasn’t disappointed at all (which is what sometimes happens when I am anticipating a great movie). I don’t want to give away any spoilers - but for any of you who think it might be some far-off science fiction fantasy, check out this article about a new robotic suit that can increase strength and endurance by up to 20 times.

But the technology already offers evidence that robotics can amplify human muscle power in reality - not just in the realm of comic books and movies like the recently debuted “Iron Man,” about a wealthy weapons designer who builds a high-tech suit to battle bad guys.

“Everybody likes the idea of being a superhero, and this is all about expanding the capabilities of a human,” said Stephen Jacobsen, chief designer of the Sarcos suit.

The Coupon Queen: Crissy Thompson

Sunday, May 18th, 2008

I love this article about a woman who knows her coupons and spends only $10 a week on groceries for a family of five (about $200-$250 worth of groceries). I especially like this tactic:

For example, Crissy grabbed two boxes of cereal that were buy 1, get 1 free. The cereal was $3.79 a box. Crissy had a three dollar coupon for each box of cereal. She made over $2.00 when she pulled those boxes off the shelves. I thought I could only use one coupon, no matter how many boxes or cans or whatever I’d bought. So that’s good for me to know.

I love it when you can game the coupons/deals and actually make money from them. Why doesn’t she just go back again and again until she has accumulated a few hundred dollars? I guess she only has a set number of coupons. But wherever you find one coupon, you can usually find more.

She didn’t buy any produce or meat when we were with her. The best deals that week were elsewhere and she told us she often gets her produce from local farmers at a nearby market where prices are very inexpensive. When we got to checkout her bill was $15.38 and she saved $36.22. Basically she saved two thirds of the bill.

I strive to save 50% with each trip to the store - two thirds is excellent. She does even better at CVS, where she gets about $140 worth of products for under $5. And Target was even better - $380 worth of items for only $0.02!!

I still don’t know how she did that one. But even she was proud. She says she kept the receipt for a long time and that everybody heard about that trip.

I thought I was good with this stuff, but I can learn a lot from her.

First two months of The Damn Thing v2.0

Friday, May 16th, 2008

The automated trading system has been running, without error, for two months now (starting on March 17). The month of May has been pretty choppy. We had a really good day today (+9.5R), but we are still only up 3.86R this month.
Here is a chart of the last two months:
automated trading system results
It is interesting to see how the % and totalR are very in tune with each other at first, but they start to separate as we slowly increase the risk per trade.
We’re up 32.02 R, with an expectancy of 0.16R per trade and a win rate of 34.18%
