No chess for me lately, but I still follow the top tournaments actively online, once or twice a year when I forget how much losing upsets me I wander over to ICC to refresh my memory.

Ugly, congratulations!

I actually prefer the scenario you described as the seller also knows things aren't perfect and usually is agreeable to lower the price. It's when I visit a house and everything is beautiful and in place and new that I get nervous as then you know the seller is going to have high expectations on price.

Now you just have to be smart enough to prevent your wife from choosing pink for the paint in the bedroom, when you are send me an email and tell me how to do the same for future reference :)

Cheers,
Andrew

Tom: I'm also a big believer in reprogramming those routines through meditation
Andrew: that's exactly what we ended up doing - using the report to drive down the price. I think we ended up with a pretty good deal. Thanks for the comments.
Trainee Trader: that is a good question. Maybe eventually we will become smart enough to find the answer.
thanks for the comments guys

[...] Just for kicks I built two models this morning for Martin Marietta Materials, Inc (MLM) and GeoEye Inc (GEOY). I did this because I’m on Maoxian’s freeloading Trade Idea list and Ugly seems to have a love affair (right now) with GEOY. Interestingly enough, a SELL signal was issued from MLM at today’s open while GEOY remains a LONG HOLD for the past 4 days (entered @ $34.58). [...]

Agree with that sentiment Tom. There might not be the Rothschild red streets (buy when you see blood) quite yet but you never know, Investing from the right (blogger) who seems switched in calls his current patch of the market as having the best buying in a generation, makes sense to me.

Jay: You can never get the exact bottom in any market. If Ugly and his lovely wife want to buy a house now then they'll get a decent price for it. Probably not the lowest but a decent price.

I don't buy the singularity at all because I'm a cynical bastard, human beings will just beat each other to death first. The winner will be the singularity.

Not a buyers' paradise yet, I'm afraid. I think housing prices will start basing in 2009. Wait one more year, depending on the area you are looking at. Markets are not created equal, of course.

On this singularity thing, remember this is a very Western notion. It may or may not be as teleological as we all want it to be. History has a funny way of going ghetto on us at the worst possible moment. (The old "history is convoluted" argument.) It is interesting to note most people from the East believe in the convoluted historical trajectory, but are big fans of unity.

Life is NOT a genetic algorithm. That is the kind of allegorical fiction that got a lot of quants into trouble over the past year. Allegories are useful, but no matter how hard you think you can't use them to build a birdhouse. (What?)

That's based on a very flimsy assumption that rationality is the foundation of Truth.

I like the Dalai Lama quote. Thanks for sharing.
