Panic setting in, markets down 4%+ on a holiday

Monday, January 21st, 2008

There is some chatter going on over on wallstreak today, even though the stock markets are closed, because of the crash in the futures this morning. KOdoubleUR posted a link to this video of the guy from HighProbabilityTrade blog going bust on a long position he took just at the close on Friday afternoon. Warning: there is a lot of swearing - it reminds me of how I sounded when I traded futures. Although, thankfully, I didn’t go bust.

I hope the best for the guy at HighProbabilityTrade - he is still young and should be able to get over it. Things like this happen in life - you just have to do the best with where you happen to be at the moment. Remember your mistakes so that you won’t repeat them, but don’t let them keep you down. Make use of your suffering.

New Wallstreak Feature: Create your own rooms

Monday, January 21st, 2008

Day trading chat rooms I’ve added a new feature to wallstreak so that you can create your own public or private rooms. I am hoping this will be useful for a couple of reasons. One, you can create your own wallstreak room for anything you want - a “dummy trades” room, for example - or a room for your blog readers. Or if you trade with others (e.g. with a group at a prop firm), you can create a room private to your group.
This is the other thing - rooms can be private. When they are set to private, only those you invite to the room will be able to read and post in the room. None of the messages will be posted to the front page. You could even create a private room where you are the only member - to keep a trading diary of what stocks you are watching or ideas you have.
When you create a room, you can include an image, url and description. The name of the room shows up in large font on the top of the page. Eventually I’d like to make this page layout much more customizable to the creator of the room.
I’ve created a public room for position trades and one for wallstreak help. There is now a tab at the top for “Rooms” - which lists all rooms that you have access to.
Let me know what you think and if you have ideas. Thanks!

Lacombe Lucien (1974)

Sunday, January 20th, 2008

Lacombe Lucien I just watched and enjoyed Lacombe Lucien. I think this movie was recommended to me via the Netflix AI recommendation system. I probably also double-checked it against Leonard Maltin’s 2007 Movie Guide. I agree with Leonard Maltin’s review of the movie:

Brilliant, perceptive account of opportunist French peasant Blaise, who joins the Gestapo during the Nazi Occupation - after setting out to join the Resistance - and falls in love with a Jewish tailor’s daughter. Subtle, complex tale of guilt, innocence, and the amorality of power; masterfully directed.

21 Years Old

Saturday, January 19th, 2008

Speaking of music - here is a song I wrote when I was 21 years old. I actually recorded this song in Jeremiah Lockwood’s parent’s house - his father is a composer and had a mini recording studio. At the time of this recording, I was a professional subways musician - under the streets of NYC. I was also a communist. A lot has changed since then. Anyway, this is one of my favorite songs that I wrote. Here is a link to the mp3, and below are the lyrics:

I used to believe in true love, but that was long before,
Lately I haven’t been so sure now anymore.
Things, once so sturdy, have been tumbling to the ground.
I’m 21 years old and this is what I’ve found.

Love changes like the weather and like a storm it can pass,
Still you’ll feel its tenderness like raindrops on the grass.
You’ll see its reflection in the puddles on the ground.
I’m 21 years old and this is what I’ve found.

Why was it taken from you? And who took it away?
You’ll question yourself, knowing there aren’t answers anyway.
You’ll find things look different on the road you travel down.
I’m 21 years old and this is what I’ve found.

I’m not sayin’ my road is the hardest - many have it rough.
I’m not sayin’ my road’s the hardest, but it sure is hard enough.
Every heart can be broken, every table can turn ’round.
I’m 21 years old and this is what I’ve found.

There’s so much more I’d like to tell you, if I just knew what to say.
I’m leaving for New York in two weeks and just a day.
Two weeks, but I have been ready for some time,
I’m 21 years old and I’ll see what I can find.
