Diageo plc (DEO)

Sunday, November 25th, 2007

When I was in Ireland, I had a Guinness every day - often with a warm bowl of fisherman’s chowder.
I was surprised to learn that sales of the world’s #1 stout are down 30% in Ireland since 2001.
I guess there is a growing trend of people wanting lighter, blander, “refreshing drinks.” Not me. I had a pint of Amstel light last weekend and it tasted like beer-flavored water. On the label it should say “30% beer.”
Anyway, even though sales are down, Diageo’s chart looks pretty strong, up 50% in the last two years:

Maybe people are switching from stout to box wine for the resveratrol.

Mens Health is the worst source of nutrition information on the internet

Sunday, November 25th, 2007

I can’t stand Mens Health. They are always trying to come up with some way to show you that bad foods are really good for you because they think that is what men want to hear (see also this article I posted about previously). It is BS, lame, and leads people in the wrong direction.
Like this:

As for the glycemic index, sweet potatoes are lower on the scale, but baked white potatoes typically aren’t eaten without cheese, sour cream, or butter. These toppings all contain fat, which lowers the glycemic index of a meal.

So they are suggesting I eat my white potatoes with butter, sour cream and cheese to lower the glycemic index to that of sweet potatoes (which have no fat)??!!? Yeah, that makes sense.

Download Free Kurosawa movies online

Wednesday, November 21st, 2007

This is awesome. I guess a lot of Kurosawa (my favorite director) movies are in public domain and can be downloaded for free.
Included are many great movies like Ikiru, Throne of Blood, and Rashomon.
Ikiru is one of my favorite movies of all-time.
