elliott & geek1: the only problem is I don't think the hard drive is IDE. I don't know what it is - but when I opened it up and looked at it, it doesn't look like anything that can be hooked into my current desktop. This computer is from the late 1980s.

Put the files onto the IDE hard drive in your old computer, and then hook that old hard drive up to your current computer. Should work.

Exactly what I would do! A philips screwdriver is all you need. I would copy the whole hard drive and stick it in a folder somewhere.

Have you considered using an emulator and creating files of those programs to run on an emulator for a PC?

I used to always do old-school transfers with serial cables. even if your new computer doesn't have a serial port, you can get a USB serial interface for that side.

or http://www.floppydisk.com/transfer.htm these people will do it for $10

if u have a modem you can dial into another computer that has its modem connected to the phone line... the other computer picks up the "phone call", and the two modems can chat... that's how we used to chat/send files in the 80's.
alternatively, you can take the hard disk out, place it in a usb enclosure and plug it into your existing machine and copy the files over.

Check with the libraries at UPenn. They should have an "archiving" expert somewhere with the equipment to help you out.

the old compter does have a 2400 baud modem. But the programs are really small, so it may work. But where do I call with a 2400 baud modem? there is no way I could set up a serial connection between these computers. I have a floppy disk - do you know of any companies that will transfer it for a fee?
