A dummy a day: Sirtris Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (SIRT)

Friday, November 30th, 2007

Since day trading is a lot about recognizing the patterns in charts, I have decided to post a chart every day that would have resulted in a profitable dummy trade. I will post these in the dummy-a-day category which you can simply click to review for practice. The chart will be displayed as it looked when the trade should have been executed, and when you move your mouse over the image, it will show how the trade would have resulted.
Much to my frustration, SIRT gave back all of the gains from the last two days. Dummy traders could have gone short:

If you shorted SIRT when it broke below its 10:30 candle at $17.96 with a stop above it at $18.51, you would risk 55 cents. Waiting to cover until the end of the day would have given you about 179 cents for every share you were short, or about 3.25 times your risk.

The 5.25″ Floppy Disk

Friday, November 30th, 2007

Floppy disk When I was home over Thanksgiving, my father fired up our old, old computer to show me some old, old games that he found that I made when I was 16 or so. These are programs I wrote in Turbo Pascal in or around 1992. It was a blast from the past.
I’d love to copy them to my computer and make them available to uglychart.com readers for free, but I am having trouble finding a way to transfer the data. The old computer only has a 5.25″ floppy drive - and I can’t find any way to get this data to either my desktop or my laptop (neither of which have any floppy drive at all). I briefly searched google for some answers, but came up with nothing. Anyone have any ideas?

Sirtris Pharmaceuticals, Inc. (SIRT)

Wednesday, November 28th, 2007

SIRT, the company that researches anti-aging and resveratrol, was up 7.8% today and is starting to look pretty nice:
SIRT
Today there was news about their new resveratrol-like pill.

Their latest research shows these experimental drug compounds — which are 1,000 times more potent than resveratrol — helped reverse diabetes symptoms and reduce insulin sensitivity in two different studies in diabetic mice and one in rats.

The discovery may have implications well beyond diabetes drugs, which is itself a $19 billion global market.

“We will make a drug to treat one disease, but it will, as an added bonus, protect you against most of the other diseases of the Western world.”

Now this is a stock that people could get excited about.

Lindsay Corporation (LNN)

Wednesday, November 28th, 2007

Wow, what a day. I made more today on my position trades than I did most days day trading. That’s nice because now I also get a salary and benefits.
Today I got LNN when it broke over $50.
LNN
I had been watching and waiting on this one. I liked the chart, and I like that the company is making more and more money every year.
Today gave a nice entry, with a stop below today’s low.
