[...] I have been taking a 500mg capsule of resveratrol every day. I am doing this as self-experimentation. The reason I chose resveratrol was because I read a lot about it and it seemed that there was very little risk, and a chance for great rewards - like not growing older. The fountain of youth. And, besides my nice trading results while on resveratrol, I think I have also stopped my ageing. I believe this based on a series of biomarker tests. I tested the following, both before and after the 50-day experiment: Vital capacity, breath-holding time, maximal oxygen consumption, kidney function, diameter pupil of the eye, visual accommodation, hearing, level of DHEA hormone in the blood, mental function, heart size, systolic blood pressure, hand grip strength, immune-function, reaction time, glucose-tolerance, levels of blood cholesterol and blood level of parathyroid hormone.
[...] If you are a believer in resveratrol, then you may be interested in investing in SIRT. Sirtris Pharmaceuticals was co-founded by Harvard University professor David Sinclair, who believes he has found an elixir of youth with resveratrol. Sinclair thinks resveratrol works by activating SIRT1, a gene that many scientists believe plays a fundamental role in regulating life span in animals. Biologists have found that increasing the expression of SIRT1 slows aging and fends off maladies associated with growing old, including cancer and heart disease. If Sinclair is right, and resveratrol can activate SIRT1–and if the gene does in fact help control aging–he has found something truly remarkable. [...]

On a related subject, I get bloodwork done every two years or so (just to see what's going on "in there"). I used to have very low HDL (the good cholesterol), but it has since skyrocketed. My girlfriend (an MD) and I believe it's in large part due to my taking Omacor, which is the only FDA-approved omega-3 supplement on the market. Studies have also linked omega-3 fatty acids to increased brain function.

As for taking various supplements, I think that the most recent stuff on the market (e.g., resveratrol) is unlikely to provide the same benefits found in the lab...at least for now. So I'm sticking to my nightly glass of vino...which you'll be happy to know comes in a box and is called Black Box (apparently they also design automated trading systems :) ).

Even the Canadian Cancer Society (very conventional) has started talking about vitamin D and prevention in Canadians. I test 25-OH vitamin D blood levels in my patients - there is epidemiological data to show that raising it about 25 points can reduce risk by 25% for colon cancer. The colon cancer data is the tip of the iceberg, as vitamin D acts more like a hormone in inducing cells to differentiate - cancer cells often "regress" and are not as differentiated. That along with the effects on the immune system make it a great nutrient even for those in sunny areas.

Having my first cup of matcha tea - about 1/2 tsp to a cup but it doesn't taste as "green" as my strong potent chinese teas. Maybe my dosing is wrong? I love that strong, bitter, green tea taste.

I don't do green tea every day, but I drink a variety of green and white and herbal teas several times a week. I'm mostly a water drinker, and until recently had wine with dinner but I've gotten tired of it.

Richard: yeah I heard that it is better to take resveratrol with lecithin, to help it be absorbed. So I try to do that. I take flax seed oil (omega-3) every day and I think it has really helped me physically and mentally. I'll never stop taking it.
I started taking a multivitamin again the other day after I heard a program on NPR about vitamin D and its anti-cancer effects.
Do you drink green tea? I swear by it, too - I drink at least 4 cups every morning.

Incidently I have recently started upping the amounts of folic acid and omega-3 I take (beyond a standard multivitamin), as they are both supposed to help process stress... which is what we subject ourselves to every damn day in the markets. I think it's helped me out a bit, and may play with upping the other B vitamins some as well.

I was reading something the other day that made me think humans aren't very good at absorbing it. The levels in the blood rose very slowly compared to the amount taken. So, you may have to seriously jack up the dosage (or start injecting it??). In the mice with all the benefits the levels of reservatrol in their blood was pretty high, I think, so they don't seem to have the same problem.

Check pricing here, as resveratrol prices vary by quality:
http://www.imminst.org/forum/index.php?act=ST&f=6&t=15059&s=

They are also not the only folks with 500mg capsules as you will see in the price list.
