Sowood Capital Management bites the dust

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

Brian posted the letter from Sowood to investors about losing half of their money (in a few weeks). And then I read about it on Reuters.
Why did this happen? Because it was possible. Why was it possible? I don’t know. It seems like a huge mistake to allow something like this to happen when managing $3 billion in capital. But maybe there is some reason I don’t understand? Is the industry so competitive and the environment so hard to make a profit that they have to resort to this type of risk? I doubt it. Most likely Jeff Larson assumed this wouldn’t happen. But did he know that it was possible? How could he not know it was possible? And if he knew it was possible, shouldn’t he have informed his investors of the risk?

But investors also said nervousness was lingering and could give rise to speculation about other funds going under.

“For the next month, we are not going to be out of the woods quite yet,” said Charles Gradante, principal at Hennessee Group, which invests in hedge funds and tracks their returns.

I’m just really surprised that big money like this and Amaranth Advisors would be so careless. How could they be so careless with so much money?
Is there something I am missing? Is so, leave a comment and let me know.
Meanwhile Citadel Investments Group has aquired both Sowood’s credit portfolio and Amaranth’s energy portfolio.

Fear Not: The Invincible America Assembly is moving the Dow to 17000

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

Well, they were able to bring it to 14000 this month:

Through group transcendental meditation the assembly — which has 1,800 people meditating daily in Iowa since it was formed in July 2006 — releases harmonious waves which benefit all aspects of U.S. life, spokesman Bob Roth told Reuters.

And the group’s leader, John Hagelin, said when that number reaches 2,500 within the next 12 months, America will see a major drop in crime and the virtual elimination of all major social and political woes.

The Stongest Stocks in the Market: Today’s All Time Highs

Tuesday, July 31st, 2007

I was looking through today’s list of stocks that made new all-time highs and I noticed that these are the strongest stocks in the market. Any stock that was able to hold up so well through last week in order to make a new high today is a very strong stock. Some familiar names: CROX, GRMN, FSLR, CMI, ISRG, LFC - including many high alpha stocks: CROX, FSLR, VDSI, SIGM, RGR, SA, ZNH. Here are some of their charts:

Chess Prodigy Illya Nyzhnyk

Monday, July 30th, 2007

Illya Nyzhnyk Practically just born - in 1996 - Illya (with his arm around a teddy bear!) went 8.5/9 earlier this year in Group B of the Moscow Open with a performance rating of 2633 - Grandmaster level! Amazing. You have to love the pictures of this 10-year old kid with his teddy bear, playing as well as a grandmaster.
Here is a chart of his rating growth - breakout!
Below is a video of Illya giving a simul:

Intuitive Surgical Inc. (ISRG), First Solar, Inc. (FSLR)

Monday, July 30th, 2007

I was watching these stocks mostly because highchartpatterns mentioned them in their newsletter. These are two nice, strong stocks. Unfortunately I missed FSLR, even though I was expecting it to run in the afternoon. It didn’t run until 1:42pm, when my attention had waned.

I did notice it, though, at 1:48pm. But I didn’t get involved as I had missed the best entry. It was a lesson learned - always be on your toes during market hours - these stocks can move at any time.
I got ISRG at the best spot, but I managed the trade poorly. It seems like I couldn’t decided if I wanted to add to or close some of my position and I ended up missing a lot of the run.

I feel like I’m still getting back into my groove, here. But it feels right.
I’ve also been watching the futures while I day trade stocks - sometimes making a futures trade. It’s been a good combination, as they often give signals to each other, and it also allows me to hedge some bets. Plus I always seemed to have a problem overtrading, but I feel like trading both of these helps because I am not as likely to force a trade on either when the setup isn’t right.

Grandpa Hilton Removes Paris Hilton’s $60 Million Inheritance

Monday, July 30th, 2007

This is awesome.

“He was, and is, extremely embarrassed by how the Hilton name has been sullied by Paris,” says Jerry Oppenheimer, who wrote a biography of the clan called House Of Hilton.

“He now doesn’t want to leave unearned wealth to his family.”

I love that he rightly calls it “unearned wealth” - exactly the topic I have been thinking a lot about lately. Maybe he read Atlas Shrugged.
