Perhaps they already know of our existence. And, we're nowhere near anywhere they'd want to build a super-highway. Maybe we just don't "get it." Maybe our numbers are chronically wrong. Or maybe, they just look at us like a hornets nest - good for the big picture, but it sucks to get too close to them. If they were to regard us as some aspect of cosmic mother nature, maybe they think it's best to leave us be.

I thought I remember reading somewhere about a window of opportunity for space exploration; something to do with the amount of resources needed to get to star A in relation to the finite resources available (in our solar system) to do so. During the development the technology needed to facilitate travel to other stars - resources are consumed, but if space exploration is not achieved within a certain window (in the region of the next 100 years or so from what I remember) - then it no longer becomes possible because there aren't the resources necessary to get to the next solar system.

The reason I have remember this piece of (mis!)information was the relatively narrow window of opportunity left to achieve this goal (in the context of human history). If an 'advanced' civilization realised this too late - then it may be trapped inside its local sphere of influence and will never be able to travel (or cross) that highway.

All of this assumes we don't nuke ourselves to oblivion first...

At least we can take comfort in the "fact" that any civilization that could make it here probably wouldn't need our resources. They could simply create another Earth in the holodeck!

Interesting comment, and analogy.

I like to think that "at least we are looking" while the ants, aren't.
