Daniel Tammet: David Letterman is a handsome 117

Friday, March 23rd, 2007

The full 60 Minutes videos are available on youtube - part 1 and part 2.
Here is also an interesting video where he meets another savant, Kim Peek.
And finally, here is a 47 minute documentary about the Brain Man.

In the documentary Daniel visits the chess hustlers in NYC. It must have been around the same time I was hanging out down there because I recognize some of those guys. The guy at 21:08 - I used to hang out with him a lot. He was one of the coolest guys there. Not the best - probably expert strength. There was one International Master who was always there, but the best hustler - the one who made the most money - was a class C player. He sucked at chess, but he was a great hustler. He would somehow make money from better players. They show the Russian IM at 23:15 - he was the best player at the park when I hung out down there.
Anyway the whole thing about memorizing the board and going down to the park for that is bogus - it isn’t hard to memorize a chess board. And why go down to Washington Square park for that? There are players who play (and win) up to 50 simultaneous blindfold games in their head.

I mentioned Daniel Tammet before, the savant who learned Icelandic in a week and memorized Pi to the 22,514th digit. You can watch his interview here.

Box wine journal review: 2007 Franzia Chianti

Thursday, March 22nd, 2007

Franzia Chianti Inspired by Tom, I have decided to start trying and reviewing different kinds of boxed wine. I’ll start with one of my favorites, the 2007 Franzia Chianti.
The reason I like this one so much is because of its supple, plush and explosive structure, with its plum and violet-tinged currant flavors which pull it all together into a deft package that glides through with a long and expressive finish. For wine in a box, it really has tremendous depth and presence.
Overall, though, it just tastes like pretty bad wine and the main reason I buy this one is because at $12 a box, it is some of the cheapest wine you can get at under $2 per 750ml.
