Prospectus & luke, thanks for the info.
I'll have to check out the paintbars.
fox: Yeah I feel the same way about tabbed charting - that is a very nice way to keep many charts organized - I'll send them an email.
thanks john

ugly: u can use it for futures...for the nasdaq emini (in conjunction with ib -- it may be different with a different source for quotes) use GLOBEX:@NQH7...if u were trading a commodity off of a different exchange, u would adjust it accordingly

Re. the message board, the old one has been transferred to qtusers.com. Is not used half as much, but q&a can still be posted there. Any questions one has have probably been asked before so it's worth looking around. The FAQ on the same site is also very useful. Emails are often answered in 5 mins, even since the Ameritrade buyout.

One feature I would like to see would be tabbed charting (like Cybertrader's). I suggested it before to the Medveds, who said they were considering it. QT users and Ugly readers who would like similar should suggest it - the more requests, the more priority this should receive.

I love QT! The paintbars are fun. And before TD Ameritrade bought them out, the customer service was seriously out of this world good. They had a message board where questions were ALWAYS answered. Unfortunately, this has been taken down but I'm still very pleased with the software.

ex-ugly -- i don't think you can do custom scans in QT, but you can set-up Trade-Ideas within QT (they can be integrated) and thus, scan your heart out, but qt itself doesn't do any scanning. And yes, IB feed just doesn't do it and IQ is perfect for QT, plus you can have up to 500 stocks on the list (so put all your fave stocks on the watchlist, makes loading faster). I'm a programming idiot but you could probably have a lot of fun with the paintbars. It's a great program; people don't take it seriously because it's so cheap but imo, it beats the hell out of E-signal. And I see prospectus already answered your question on the backfill, yes it can be done automatically. Sometimes i've had problems with the automatic backfill, and if you do too, then use the other alternative which is - Portfolio, Backfill All symbols (providing that the stocks are already on your watchlist/port). If you use a lot of indicators and special things you might also want to save templates and load them up whenever you want. have fun.

[...] I just realized via a post on uglychart that I can use QuoteTracker as my charting software for free, since I happen to have an old Ameritrade account lying around. That may be great news for me, since I spend too much energy fighting with Scottrade’s platform (and their occasionally wrong charts!). I wonder if I can set it up to get quotes from Ameritrade, and place orders through scottrade? If not, I can just enter orders through scottrade’s platform. No big deal. I’m going to play with it this weekend! [...]

I use quote tracker mainly to track DOW and S&P 500 stocks and I just picked great tip from your comment..."I just put the QQQQ on the list and keep my eye on everything that is above it (i.e. has increased volume relative to the QQQQ)." Thanks!!

I love QuoteTracker, too. Never used it for futures. You can change the option to auto-backfill by going to:

Options>Data Sources/Proxy Settings

Under the "backfill" tab, after you select your source (mine's TD Ameritrade) there are two checkboxes that appear. One auto-backfills when you add a stock, and one auto-backfills when you open a chart. That should fix it.

I haven't really used the watchlist--I use the portfolios instead for my watchlists. I'd love to know more about how you use them. I also don't think QT does any scanning, so if you find out how please let me know!

I also like QT's paintbars--where you can format candles and other graphics to show up on a chart based on price or indicator values. I'm still thinking of uses for them! I have one that puts a little symbol above narrowing range bars and inside bars, as well as NR7 on a daily chart. I also have one for William O'Niell's Distribution criteria that shows up on daily charts for me. Let me know if you want the code for them.
