[...] It was a radio ad, and the offensive bit was a description of Gruener Vetliner wines as an “anti-depressant ideal against the usual Monday-morning blues”. It’s kind of funny, but then “medicating” yourself with alcohol is a sign of alcoholism. Of course it is more socially acceptable to drink wine to improve your physical health rather than your mental health. Like our friend Ugly, who drinks red wine for the resveratrol.
You may want to have folks check Resveratrol out in the online encyclopedia, as it has info on foods, supplements, and the science behind it.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Resveratrol

thanks

[...] I’ve posted before about the health benefits of green tea and red wine. I have one or two glasses of red wine per day and four cups or green tea. The trouble is that in the experiments that have shown benefits with mice, the mice often take a much higher dose per kilogram of weight than I get from my daily routine. So I thought I would try taking a supplement. Benefits of resvertrol are still unproven in humans, but I think the possible benefits outweigh the potential risks. According to wikipedia, the US government is concerned about the potential dangers of increased, unregulated usage but a “preliminary study of existing research found little evidence that resveratrol is toxic, even at very high dosages.” I ordered the Jarrow Formulas Synergy supplement, which has 16mg of resveratrol per capsule, or the equivalent of 10-50 glasses of wine. You can get some other supplements that have 500mg of resveratrol, which is about the equivalent of what mice are given in experiments. This supplement also contains 200mg of green tea extract. And 50mg of grape seed OPCs, which I don’t know much about but here is the wikipedia entry. I’m not sure if this will do any good, but it seems like it can’t hurt to give it a try. I’m gong to try it out for a couple of months and see how it makes me feel. [...]

Tyro: yeah or you can take a 50mg resveratrol supplement with a glass of boxed wine.
Jason: thanks for the link, cool.
Zoomie: I'm thinking of taking the supplement too.
mrmike: I agree
richard: I agree, but maybe resveratrol will help people live long enough to live forever.

Remember the line in the movie "Just Friends" where the protagonist goes back to his hometown- he's at the pub when he spots the former high school beauty (Amy Smart), and she looks better than ever... then the drunk loser who was popular in high school staggers over and says, "Yeah, she's like a box of good wine, isn't she?"

@Tyro; Anyway, according to the wikipedia article, it takes only 50 bottles a day. Sounds easy after your 1500 bottle estimate! :-)

Anyway, there's little need for this, as technology will soon extend our lives indefinitely. Just stay healthy a couple more decades and it should start to happen...

Ugly & Tyro,
The french paradox...interesting. I am going to the store today and purchasing some red grape juice, really. Hopefully the massive doses the mice were given isn't necessary!

Hey, Ugly. We have that WS Top 100 list in our DB at WineLog. The PDF is good for printing, but try this link if you want to search through the wines, sort them by price, or try to buy some online:

Cheers!

You should probably start with some of the cheaper wines. According to the NY Times, you'll need to drink 750-1500 bottles of wine each day to get any benefit. Bottoms up!
