Kurzweil on the daily show

Tuesday, August 29th, 2006

This is some funny stuff:

protein kinase M zeta

Tuesday, August 29th, 2006

SUNY Downstate researchers have discovered a molecular mechanism that controls memory. By inhibiting the enzyme, scientists were able to “erase a memory that had been stored for one day, or even one month.” If I remember correctly, this is similar to what they did in Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.

The enzyme molecule called “protein kinase M zeta” preserves long-term memories through persistent strengthening of synaptic connections between neurons.

Maybe taking some protein kinase M zeta in your tea every morning will help your trading. I wanted to post it here so that I wouldn’t forget about it.

Shoalin Temple abbot & the luxury car

Monday, August 28th, 2006

Shi Yongxin, the abbot of the famed Shoalin Temple, has created a stir by accepting a $125,000 luxury car for his “services for tourism.”

“I will try my best to promote martial arts to the world in an attempt to boost local tourism. I dream of getting a bigger prize next year,” Shi said when he received the car a week ago, according to the Xinhua news agency.

Similarly, Mother Teresa was given a limousine in 1964 from Pope Paul VI, which she “immediately raffled to help finance her leper colony.”

Computer “host writers” at Thomson Financial

Monday, August 28th, 2006

Computer programs at Thomson Financial write company earnings stories in 0.3 seconds.

“This is not about cost but about delivering information to our customers at a speed at which they can make an almost immediate trading decision,” said Matthew Burkley, senior vice-president of strategy at Thomson Financial.

Mr Burkley said the computer-generated stories had not made any mistakes. But he said they were very standardised. “We might try and write a few more adjectives into the program,” he said.

Thiings are looking more and more like Terminator 3.

Google Inc. (GOOG)

Monday, August 28th, 2006

Today was the first day of the rest of my trading career. I followed my system very carefully.
I got GOOG above the 10:30 candle:
GOOG
The 10:30 candle was so thin that I didn’t buy as many shares of GOOG as I would usually like to risk. I try not to allow one position to be too large (just in case something horrible happens), and my position in GOOG was at the maximum. Still the R value (dollars risked) on this trade was only about half of what I’d like it to be.

Ugly Picks

Good morning, my name is Ugly, and I am a loser. I have it in me to do serious financial damage to my account.

Dear Diary,
There are a lot of important “keys” to trading, but one of them is definitely to not be afraid of losing. I agree with Mandeep that at least part of the reason for my poor performance this month was due to fear of losing.
Based on Friday’s trading, the following stocks are worth noting:

BDCO Basic Materials Independent Oil & Gas
BTJ Basic Materials Oil & Gas Equipment & Services
OMNI Basic Materials Oil & Gas Equipment & Services
AMAG Healthcare Diagnostic Substances
ELN Healthcare Drug Delivery
VRTX Healthcare Drug Manufacturers - Other
HOKU Technology Diversified Electronics
