Ugly Picks

Monday, September 19th, 2005

Good morning, my name is Ugly, and I am a loser. I have it in me to do serious financial damage to my account.

Dear Diary,
GFIG is awesome.
Although not at a new high yet, CHNL looks very promising.
GMXR continues to continue - nice one.
AAPL defies the market.
AMGN is another diamond in the rough.
ALJ is on fire, as with all of the other energy stocks.

It will be interesting to see how this chart plays out:

Chess Whiz Jude Acers survives Katrina

Monday, September 19th, 2005

When Katrina hit, I wondered what would happen to Jude Acers - a chess master who plays for money on the streets of New Orleans - after the hurricane. I have been following the news - first he was missing, now he has been interviewed in the Greeneville shelter. I played him once for $5 in 2001. He even accepted credit cards on his cardboard table set up on the sidewalk. I paid cash. It was a kind of close game, but he beat me. He seemed like a pretty nice guy. There was one point, though, when I believe he was trying to pick me up because he would brush his foot against mine a couple of times. It was very subtle and I moved my foot away each time, so I am only about 95% sure this is what was going on.
A lot of nice things are being written about him, and a “Jude Acers fund” has been set up.
I have heard before that he was kicked out of the United States Chess Federation for submitting false tournament results in order to lower his rating, so that he could qualify for more prizes.
Here is an interesting interview with him in which he says “the USCF is a corporate ripoff” and that “the Asian invasion has just begun… Start studying your Mandarin right now.”
Adding evidence to my theory that there is a much higher ratio of crazy chess players than non-chess players, he was once committed to an institution.

Another reason to eat your fruits and veggies

Monday, September 19th, 2005

Vegetables and fruit reduce the risk of pancreatic cancer by 50%. Oddly, pork rinds were not mentioned.

Onions, garlic, beans, yellow vegetables (carrots, yams, sweet potatoes, corn and yellow squash), dark leafy vegetables and cruciferous vegetables were most strongly associated with protection against pancreatic cancer, the researchers found. Fruit was also found to offer a protective effect, but much less so than vegetables. Citrus fruits and juices were the most protective fruits.

Ugly Picks

Sunday, September 18th, 2005

Good morning, my name is Ugly, and I am a loser. I have it in me to do serious financial damage to my account.

Dear Diary,
The large volume on the Nasdaq on Friday makes the chart look interesting. This 2100-2200 range will eventually be broken on one side or the other.
SMTS looks nice.
The chart on MSSR looks to head higher.
Nice move on NTGR to close at a new high.
RGLD is moving strongly.
There is absolutely no resistance above for FLDR as it closed at an all-time high.
ARD looks pretty awesome.
Recent IPO EPE should be watched closely.
What a pretty chart RAVN has, breaking out of a base in 2000 and following a close uptrend line ever since.
MXBIF broke out over $25 - nice one.
Portfolio pick SRLS made a new high.

I was away since Thursday for a wedding. Congratulations to Jen and Joe! I had a blast. It was great to see some old friends and it was really fun being undefeated and winning the ping-pong tournament. But when you are a United States Ping Pong Federation rated Master, it is to be expected.
I think something was wrong with the website for IE users - sorry about that, it should be fixed now.

Ugly Picks

Wednesday, September 14th, 2005

Good morning, my name is Ugly, and I am a loser. I have it in me to do serious financial damage to my account.

Dear Diary,
Today was pretty ugly and, unless it turns around sharply, I think the trend will continue in the down direction for the near term.
Auto sales fell 12% - maybe it is a good time to buy a car? Although I dearly love my beat up Honda, I am getting tired of always having to keep the windows down so I don’t die of car exhaust asphyxiation - especially when it rains, like it did today. And with the cold weather coming around - long trips are miserable (last winter I drove all the way from Minnesota to Ohio and back with the windows down!).
One of my readers really likes TRE - which closed at an all-time high today.
