Mark Dennis Cook says SELL!!!

Saturday, August 13th, 2005

From businessday.co.za:

“At this juncture I am seeing the potential for the US market to go into a free fall … THE COOK CUMULATIVE TICK (a tool he developed to determine potential trend movements) is the most overbought since December 1999. I spoke at a conference in New York in February 2000. I warned the crowd that this market was going to get crushed. I had two dozen people walk out on me. I said, if you are in this market get out now … right now it is the same type of market. It is like the bear rally in 1929 before the October crash.”

Kamikaze -vs- suicide bombers

Saturday, August 13th, 2005

Japan’s wartime kamikaze resent comparison with modern suicide bombers because of difference in mission.

“I feel insulted to hear our missions described as the same as Islam’s suicide bombings,” said the 83-year-old veteran.

“We did this in wartime battle, samurai against samurai, and what they are doing are indiscriminate attacks aimed at killing innocent people,” he said, referring to the code-bound samurai knights of medieval Japan.

“For those who carried out the attacks in London or Iraq, there must be their own reasons such as reacting to contempt, an offense or pressure,” said Hamazono, a former navy pilot of the Kamikaze Special Attack Force.

“But no one has a right to kill innocent people, especially children,” said the 81-year-old veteran, whose lethal mission ended incomplete after his Zero fighter was damaged in a dog-fight just before the end of World War II.

“Terrorist attacks will never bring any happiness to terrorist groups in the end,” Hamazono warned in low voice.

Ugly Picks

Thursday, August 11th, 2005

Good morning, my name is Ugly, and I am a loser. I have it in me to do serious financial damage to my account.

Dear Diary,
KNOT was up strong on earnings news - can it break the psychologically important round number $10?
STV is a beauty - it is perfect for the ugly scan - just like HANS, ERS, etc…

MHP made a new all-time high and looks steady and sure.
GMXR is super strong as usual.
Recent IPO BECN made a new high and might be one to keep your eye on.
CRZO looks pretty good, but CNBC said there is still 50% more upside to it, so I will stay away. 50% isn’t enough profit for me. Just kidding, but it makes me uncomfortable to own a stock that CNBC is pumping.

The 2100-2150 area offers some support for the Nasdaq because of its uptrend line, 50dma and previous resistance:

Ugly Picks

Good morning, my name is Ugly, and I am a loser. I have it in me to do serious financial damage to my account.

Dear Diary,
ADPI looks kind of good.
ASR looks kind of better.
NTGR is one to keep your eye on.
Delicious light sweet crude pudding keeps going up.
JOYG held its gains while the rest of the market sold off.
MORN is moving up quickly after its recent IPO.
FIX is going nuts.

The road trip was mostly smooth, but not all smooth. One time I accidentally threw away my keys with a tray of trash at an A&W (I prefer Subway on road trips, but my friend wanted to stop at A&W). Luckily I had a spare key.
And one time at a gas station my car wouldn’t start. No lights, nothing - all electrical was dead. It turns out the hook-up on my battery was dirty and once we cleaned it, she started up fine.

Ugly Picks

Tuesday, August 9th, 2005

Good morning, my name is Ugly, and I am a loser. I have it in me to do serious financial damage to my account.

Dear Diary,
I finally made it. There is so much work involved with moving. It is very stressful and stress is very bad for your health. That is why taking the 10-day vipassana meditation course was a great thing to do. At the time I thought I didn’t get anything out of it, especially by how poorly I followed the instruction.
I thought I was too down-to-earth for meditation and that it was impractical. Luckily, one of the instructors was very down-to-earth and compassionate and was able to convince me to stay with it.
Meditation is an extremely good tool for traders - and for everyone - as it allows you to control your emotions. Not really control your emotions, but control your actions based on the emotions that you feel. It allows you to think rationally and calmly in the face of panic, fear, or any whirlwind of emotions that can be caused by unexpected events. It can even be used to withstand any amount of pain. For example, check out the monks who set themselves on fire and meditated until their ashes blew away in the wind.
I don’t practice meditation enough - I was still completely stressed out with the move.
As for the stock market, it was down on Friday and Monday, so I think this down trend will continue a little more. A breakout above Nasdaq 2200 will be a good buying point as it would be a strong indication that the market will continue higher.
PETS is obeying its 4-year uptrend line and looks to make new highs.
ISRG looks really nice as it makes new highs.
Did you see STV?? Damn. I hope some of you got a piece of it -I didn’t.

And by the way, that beat up ‘90 Honda Civic, loaded down and without a muffler, gave me over 40 miles per gallon on the trip. I was beaming like a proud father every time I filled the tank and calculated the mileage.

Ugly Picks

Friday, August 5th, 2005

Good morning, my name is Ugly, and I am a loser. I have it in me to do serious financial damage to my account.

Dear Diary,
QSII did nicely today after its earnings news. It is a solid looking stock.
You might want to keep an eye on recent IPO TBSI - it is pointing up.

There is a saying in the chess world - “All chessplayers should have a hobby” - because it is too easy to get too involved with the game. I was trying to think of a similar quote for traders - maybe “most day traders should keep a job.”
Anyway I can see from my recent online chess playing skillz that the stress of my cross-country move is getting in the way of clear thinking. I have used this barometer as a guide to hold off on most trading for now.
I didn’t think I would (and I probably don’t) have time to go through the charts, but once I start looking, I can’t stop. The charts are such pretty little things.
Speaking of pretty charts, Infectious Greed posted a cool chart of inflation adjusted NYSE seat sale prices.

Speaking of Gandhi…

Thursday, August 4th, 2005

Here is a quote of Gandhi’s that would fit well with the recent article, The Christian Paradox, in Harper’s Magazine (via maoxian.com):

“I consider western Christianity in its practical working a negation of Christ’s Christianity.”

Aubrey de Grey’s paper on Caloric Restriction

Thursday, August 4th, 2005

April Smith, who is very kind and has been extremely helpful with my move to Philadelphia and with my questions about caloric restriction, has posted a reply to my inquiry about her thoughts on Aubrey de Grey’s belief that caloric restriction will not do much (2 or 3 years) for extending the life span of humans. Aubrey wrote a paper explaining his opinion in detail [pdf]. Michael Rae, Aubrey’s research assistant, is a strong supporter of caloric restriction and has written a rebuttal to Aubrey’s paper, which has not yet been published.
2 or 3 years by itself might not be worth the suffering of a life with less calories. However, in addition to extending your life and contributing to your health, taking it on as an act of penance might also be spiritually, emotionally, psychologically and even politically beneficial.
