Ugly Picks

Friday, August 19th, 2005

Good morning, my name is Ugly, and I am a loser. I have it in me to do serious financial damage to my account.

Dear Diary,
CEDC is one of a few stocks on the all-time high list that look pretty good.
The all-time high list, which just weeks ago had two to three hundred stocks, only had 31 today.

Dear Diary,
It is no time to buy, not yet. We have to see if this downward momentum will be held up by support. When the little trend turns in the same direction as the big trend, that is a good time to buy.
NWD is moving pretty quickly and will probably continue to do so.

This caloric restriction stuff is hard, at least for me. Sometimes it is as easy as pie - and other times I am raving mad with hunger. That is when I usually brew another jar of green tea, which kind of sickens me enough to make the hunger go away. I love green tea, but jar after jar kind of gets to you.

NYC Film Forum’s Summer Samurai

Tuesday, August 16th, 2005

For you lucky New Yorkers, don’t miss the “Summer Samurai” series showing at the Film Forum August 19 - September 15. Damn, I am so busy but I really can’t miss something like this. I think I am going to have to drive to NYC after work one day next week and then back the same night because I really really want to see Samurai Rebellion.

Control your emotions

Tuesday, August 16th, 2005

Here is a short article that talks about emotions and trading. As Warren Buffet says, “you can’t manage money until you can manage your emotions.”

“We need to understand our emotions and the way they drive us and make sure we’re in control of them,” says Friedman. She advises anyone who is about to make a financial decision to go away and think about it before committing themselves.

Kung Fu Master heads to the mountains

Tuesday, August 16th, 2005

Master Yang, “one of the most respected kung fu practitioners in the world,” has given up on teaching students in this distracting society and plans to teach in the mountains of California.

“When I come here, I have big hopes — I say, maybe I can teach foreigners to reach the level. They try. It’s not easy. And then finally, I wake up,” Yang said in an interview at the spartan offices of YMAA headquarters. “Society is too much a distraction. Their mind cannot concentrate. Their life is not easy. So that’s why I say, OK, to train, I need to be like ancient times. Take them to the mountains.”

“Take Them to the Mountains” isn’t one of those evocative descriptions of a tai chi move, like “Grasp Sparrow’s Tail” or “White Crane Spreads its Wings.” Yang has sold his publishing company, purchased 240 wooded acres in California’s remote Humboldt County, and built a cabin. He has formed a private foundation and, if all goes as planned, two years from now the master will lead a small group of students into the mountains to study. For 10 years.

Dear Diary,
Nice move on LUFK over the psychologically important round number $50. Quickly to $100 now?
ISRG continues to make new highs and continues to look great.

The market is an amazing thing. There is always something happening. Fortunes are made and lost every day. Not only is something always happening, but something is always about to happen. That’s the fun part - trying to guess what is next. And then watching to see what happens.
Every day is a new opportunity, but a big part is waiting patiently for the right moment to make your move.

More on tea and health

Monday, August 15th, 2005

I have been reading Dr. Walford’s book on caloric restriction in most of my free time (which hasn’t been much since the move). It is a good book and pretty convincing. Besides his arguments for caloric restriction, there is a lot of good information about health in general. There is even a section on the chemicals in tea. Although it is not yet proven, he points to evidence that there are a lot of benefits to green tea and recommends it for his CRON (calorie restriction with optimal nutrition) diet. About steeping he says:

It is worth mentioning that steeping tea for three to four minutes is enough to get all the antioxidants in the beverage. Prolonged steeping releases oxalates, a component in three-quarters of kidney stones.

My previous thoughts about tea steeping were “the longer the better.” But now I time it to four minutes.
Also, drink jars and jars of green tea every day. He says:

Epidemiologic studies in humans remain equivocal, possibly due to dosages, since over ten cups of tea per day may be required to manifest a significant effect in humans for cancer, for cardiovascular and liver effects, for lowering of cholestrol and triglycerides, and for an increase in HDL.

Dear Diary,
AAPL made a new high with strong volume to score a nice looking breakout during a weak market. Soon uglychart.com will have defeated maoxian in the battle of the egos. Kind of.
Ouch, FMD is getting creamed.
WSSI looks pretty nice.

Mark Dennis Cook has made me paranoid. It clouds my judgement. I have to try a little harder to look at the market in an unbiased way. Still, it is probably better now to wait to buy until we see the Nasdaq clearly break over 2200. Under 2100 is a sign that he may be right.
