Ordered: The Hidden Blade

Wednesday, August 24th, 2005

I tried to order The Hidden Blade from one other online seller, but was denied because it said that the movie could not be exported to the US due to copyright restrictions. However, I tried edaymovie.com and was notified today that the item has been shipped.
But it looks like you can get it pretty cheap on eBay.

Ugly Picks

Wednesday, August 24th, 2005

Good morning, my name is Ugly, and I am a loser. I have it in me to do serious financial damage to my account.

Dear Diary,
Japan has been strong the last couple of weeks.
China, though, is looking weak.
BTUI has a nice looking chart, but it is not making a new all-time high and its earnings growth could be better.
Hmmmmmmm…. RTSX, one of my favorites made a nice little move today. I’d watch that one pretty closely - it looks pretty sweet.
Another favorite, ATLS, closed at a new high.
LIFC is powerful despite the unenergetic market.
JVA is going at it again.
BBSI closed at a new high and looks pretty nice.

Bio-Beer

Tuesday, August 23rd, 2005

They say that one to two alcoholic beverages a day promotes health. As if that wasn’t good enough, Advaith Biotech has fortified beer with vitamins and nutrients and made it supposedly “protect the body from the harmful effects of alcohol.”

Bio-beer was made up of barley malt; Carbondioxide hops extracts and extract of aloe-vera.

Apart from giving the “pleasant feeling” this also protects the liver by improving its function; he said claiming it reduces the blood cholesterol and also maintains the bilirubin levels to normal levels.

The Chushingura expert certification test

Tuesday, August 23rd, 2005

The Tokyo-based organization, Chuo Gishikai, is now offering an expert certification test on the Chushingura, the 47 loyal samurai story that occurred over 300 years ago. This famous story is the inspiration of many great samurai movies.

The exam consists of 50 multiple choice and written questions, testing people on their general knowledge of the 47 masterless samurai and the historical events surrounding the incident. Applicants need to correctly answer 40 of the questions correctly during the 90-minute test period to pass.

End of World comic

Tuesday, August 23rd, 2005

The Big Picture put up a funny comic today - check it out.

Also, here is a good knock-knock joke I heard:

Person 1: Knock Knock
Person 2: Who’s there?
Person 1: Control Freak
Person 1 (interrupting Person 2): Now you say “Control Freak who”

Ugly Picks

Tuesday, August 23rd, 2005

Good morning, my name is Ugly, and I am a loser. I have it in me to do serious financial damage to my account.

Dear Diary,
Solid ISRG continues to make new all-time highs.
FLO is another solid stock that doesn’t stop rising.
Both of these made new all-time highs.
Portfolio pick UHAL made a new high.
Recent IPO HITT is one to keep your eye on.

For the second time in my life, I am an uncle. My sister just had another son - Rocco. I think the name is pretty funny (in a good way) but my mother doesn’t see the humor in it. When my first nephew was born - Kai - I thought it would be a good idea to have him refer to me only as “Uncle Buck.” My plan has worked out pretty well as that is the only name he knows me by.

9/11 Transcripts

Monday, August 22nd, 2005

The NY Times has a site that links to a bunch of pdf transcripts of interviews with firefighters, paramedics, etc… about the World Trade Center attacks. This is another site I can spend hours (months) on. Some of the personal stories of the people at the scene of the disaster really paint a detailed picture of the confusion and horror they experienced.

Flash Earth

If you would like to get to know the world a little better, this flash page, which uses google’s satellite images, will help you out. I could spend hours on the website.

Ugly Picks

Monday, August 22nd, 2005

Good morning, my name is Ugly, and I am a loser. I have it in me to do serious financial damage to my account.

Dear Diary,
I emailed Mark Cook about his sell signal, which I mentioned before. He said it was quoted from one of his advisories, which he sends out twice daily to day and position traders. He said that, as of this past Tuesday, he had the most bearish signal of his entire 28-year trading career.
Mark is also from Ohio, the heart of it all.
MRK is a dog of a stock. If it ever goes up, I don’t think it will be for long.
ADSK, on the other hand, is not and closed Friday at an all-time high.
You can’t deny the strength of recent IPO RAIL.
ASEI looks strong.
You think these picks look good? You should check out this!

My flight to Minneapolis was cancelled Friday night because of the NWA strike, so I turned the car around and drove up to NYC to see the premiere of the Summer Samurai series at the Film Forum. Samurai Rebellion was worth the drive, with my favorite actor Toshiro Mifune doing a great job as Isaburo Sasahara, an aging samurai. I think Kurosawa could have shot it better, but Kobayashi did a fine job. One thing that bothered me was that the audience would laugh at parts of the film that were not supposed to be funny. I guess these people had not seen many samurai movies before and so they were not used to, for example, some of the exaggerated facial expressions. But these were times when the movie was trying to communicate a mood - and it wasn’t humor. It was annoying, as I was trying to understand the mood but was constantly being distracted by the audience laughing. At some points I felt like saying really loud, over their laughing, “this is not supposed to be funny.” I also felt like laughing really loud when the audience was serious and contemplative.
